Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
Expert has had responsibility for the conception, specification, design, installation, and start-up of three steel strip mills. He has worked with a 3-stand, 4-high mill that was powered by three 1000-hp motors. He also worked with a 20-high Sendzimer mill powered by three 500-hp motors. These mills were computer controlled with automatic gauges. He is familiar with hydraulic roll positioning and with semi-automatic coil feeding and delivery systems. He has also worked with a single strand reversing 4-high/6-high mill powered by one 1000 hp DC motor.

Expert has expertise with specifying and monitoring the operation of steel annealing furnaces. He has directed, supervised, designed, and analyzed tests comparing various furnaces. He is familiar with the different designs of base fan capacities as well as the comparison of hydrogen, dissociated ammonia, and nitrogen atmospheres. He understands the requirements for storing and handling the various gases that are needed for steel annealing. He is equally adept with the methods of generating atmospheres required on-site. He is knowledgeable of the many furnace designs currently on the market and can analyze and compare their performance. He can answer questions on furnace installation and supporting systems.

Expert has worked with crane manufacturers to specify, select, and install a variety of overhead electric bridge cranes. Expert has specified, purchased, and supervised the installation of five steel slitting lines. These lines include a 22-inch wide slitter that fed into 17 oscillating take-up reels producing a layer-wound product without the use of side pans or spools; two, 20-inch pull-through slitters to produce pancake-wound coils; and a 50-inch wide, 9-inch diameter arbor heavy duty slitter for primary slitting of up to 3/8-inch material. He also worked with an ultra-modern double loop powered slitter with automatic coil feed-up, automatic loop control, continuous back-tensioning device, all coil handling, and three replaceable heads.

Having specified, purchased, and installed three roll grinding machines, he has extensive experience with the control of the roll profiles and the real-time measuring and recording of the diameters and roughness of the roll surface.

Over the past 25 years, expert has been responsible or supervising the installation and maintenance of capital equipment for cold rolled strip steel mills. He is experienced with rolling mills, steel slitters, annealing furnaces, roll grinding equipment, air compressors, overhead cranes, electrical substations, water pollution control systems, cooling towers, liquid nitrogen equipment, liquid anhydrous ammonia systems, ammonia dissociators, ventilation systems, coil handling equipment, and other systems and equipment found in modern steel mills.

He has designed and supervised the installation of two electrical substations to feed plants with roughly 5,000KW and 15,000KW power. He has supervised the maintenance of substations feeding plants demanding from 5,000KW to 40,000KW of power with voltages up to 115,000 volts. Familiar with electrostatic application of powders and liquids, he has participated in the installation, testing, and start-up of electrostatic equipment to deposit powdered paint and anneal release powder as well as lubricating oils. As the manager of maintenance operations at both aluminum and steel mills, he has experience in management of maintenance operations. His responsibilities included hiring, training, performance monitoring, establishing quality standards, and scheduling.

In an area of secondary expertise, he has worked with the design and installation of a 15,000KVA 3-phase electric-arc steel melting furnace. He has also consulted on the design and operation of a 26 ft diameter, 165 ton three phase furnace. Expert was responsible for the installation and start-up of a 14-strand hot metal continuous rod and bar mill, complete with a preheat furnace for incoming metal and the take-up equipment for the finished coils. Expert has specified, purchased and installed 20 bell-annealing furnaces. He has aided in the sale of such furnaces and has done experimental work and analyses of various atmosphere uses, including carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Expert conducted an in-depth study of metal shredding in an attempt to improve scrap handling. He can answer questions on reducing scrap steel into smaller pieces for easier handling. He has investigated electrical accidents and electrical failures to determine the cause of each. These have been both personal injury accidents and those with only equipment damage. These accidents have included missing limbs, fatalities, and electrocutions. He has successfully analysed and been deposed for the responsibilities of various parties concerning industrial accidents and their relationships to OSHA regulations.
