CORROSION OF METALS; ALLOY CORROSION. Expert has worked on the corrosion of commercial metals since 1957, from engineering and scientific points of view. Metals and alloys he has worked on include: low alloy and carbon steels, stainless steels, high nickel alloys, copper base alloys, titanium alloys, zirconium alloys, aluminum alloys, and super alloys. He has studied all kinds of related phenomena, including all modes of corrosion, such as general corrosion, pitting, intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, hydrogen embrittlement, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, and erosion corrosion. His knowledge of engineering corrosion problems includes corrosion broadly of components such as heat exchange equipment, piping, vessels, structures, electronic materials, exteriors, containers, turbines, welded assemblies, and similar industrial conditions.

SCIENTIFIC BASES FOR CORROSION. Expert has worked on fundamental factors affecting corrosion, including electrochemistry, high temperature autoclave techniques, surface analysis, ellipsometry, kinetics, and thermodynamics.

STRESS CORROSION CRACKING; CORROSION FATIGUE. Much of Expert's work has been directed toward understanding the science and engineering of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. This work has included conducting engineering tests and carrying out fundamental studies. The engineering studies have included studies of crack initiation and propagation in both room temperature and high temperature water environments. The fundamental work has included considerations of the breaking of passive films, transient dissolution and entry of hydrogen.

PREDICTING CORROSION-BASED PERFORMANCE; CORROSION IN NUCLEAR REACTOR SYSTEMS. Expert has developed methods for predicting the performance of engineering materials and components where corrosion plays a significant role. The steps involved in predicting corrosion-based performance include defining environments, material properties which affect corrosion, possible modes and sub-modes of corrosion, statistical distributions, accelerated tests, predictions, feedback, and modification. This procedure, appropriately tailored, can be used generally to predict performance of all materials and components.

CORROSION FAILURE ANALYSIS OF MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS. Expert has been involved in determining the cause of failure in a broad range of industries where corrosion and fracture are involved. Such industries include electric power, chemical industry, petroleum refining, reinforced concrete, electronic materials, buildings, water distribution, general manufacturing, pipelines, and transportation generally. Environments that affect corrosion which Expert has considered include the atmosphere, fresh and salt water, hydrocarbons, soils, concrete, chemical engineering fluids, food environments, medical environments, high temperature water, hot gases, microbial environments, concentrated chemicals, and radioactive wastes.

Career Accomplishments:

Expert is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (elected 1978), National Association of Corrosion Engineers, American Society for Metals, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a member of the Electrochemical Society, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the American Water Resources Association.


He has received the Whitney Award for Outstanding contributions to Corrosion Science from NACE. He has also received the NACE Fellow Award for outstanding contributions and organizational skills in the field of corrosion research and dissemination of valuable scientific and engineering data. In addition, he has received the NACE T.J. Hull Award for outstanding contributions to NACE in the field of publications.
