A significant portion of Expert's career has been devoted to the study of surface acoustic waves (SAW's) and their applications. Presently, his emphasis is on studying the applications of these waves for use in a variety of physical, chemical, and biological sensors. Theoretical and experimental work has been done on SAW sensors for measuring temperature, pressure, acceleration, humidity, gas flows, and high voltages. He is also developing passive, wireless sensors that can be addressed and controlled remotely.

MICROSENSORS. Expert is presently investigating microsensors that are realized using ultrasonic Lamb waves (sometimes also called acoustic plate waves). Sensors using Lamb waves retain all the attractive features of SAW sensors, while providing important additional advantages (such as higher sensitivity, lower operating frequency, the ability to operate in liquid media, and faster response). Work is currently in progress on developing biosensors and chemical sensors using these waves.

SURFACE ACOUSTIC WAVE; OSCILLATORS. Expert has designed and developed a number of SAW devices such as delay lines, pulse compression filters, resonators, oscillators, and correlators, for use in a variety of radar and communication applications.

ACOUSTICAL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS; PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCER; ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCER. Expert has developed several instruments based on the use of acoustic waves. This work has involved the design of suitable piezoelectric transducers, analog and digital circuits, and others. For example, one of the instruments that has been developed was an ultrasonic bolt monitor. This instrument has proven to be very useful for accurately measuring stresses and strains in bolts and other fasteners.
