Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
COATINGS; LIQUID COATINGS; POLYMER COATINGS. Expert has about 35 years of research, development, and teaching experience in coating technology. He was trained as an organic chemist but switched to synthetic polymer chemistry early in his career. While his experience in polymers is broad, much of his activity has involved organic coatings. He has worked with most of the major generic types and their end uses. His research interests include structure control in polymer synthesis, novel polymer crosslinking methods, new polymeric binders for low-pollution coatings, synthesis of reactive oligomers, liquid crystalline polymers, polymer structure/property relationships, radiation curable, water-borne polymers, and powder, higher-solids and solventless coatings.

ORGANIC COATINGS. Most of his career has been devoted to organic coatings technology. His main expertise is in the polymeric binders of coatings, acrylics, polyesters, alkyds, epoxies, polyurethanes, and melamine formaldehyde resins. Having co-authored a two-volume book on coatings science and technology, his expertise spans most parts of the subject. He is experienced with technical/legal issues, especially with patents.

COATING RAW MATERIAL. Expert consults on most aspects of organic coatings, especially on polymeric binders. He is experienced in product development, licensing, technology assessment and new opportunity indentification. He is also familiar with raw materials suppliers to the coatings industry, coatings producers, and coatings users.

REACTIVE POLYMER; HIGH SOLIDS ORGANIC COATINGS. Much of his research over the past 15 years has been heavily involved with reactive polymers of the types used in coatings and high solids and powder organic coatings.

POLYMER CHEMISTRY. Expert has a broad background in polymer chemistry. He has detailed knowledge of many aspects of polymer chemistry and has an appreciation of the rest.

LITIGATION SUPPORT. He has recent, successful experience in product liability and intellectual property litigation involving coatings. Details upon request.

Expert continues an active research program on abrasion-resistant materials. His research led to improved understanding of abrasion and mar resistance (over a dozen publications) and assisted in practical improvements such as better mar resistant automotive coatings and improved scratch-resistant hard coatings for polycarbonate.

Expert has had first-hand experience with acrylic coatings for about 30 years. He remains active in researching acrylic automotive clearcoats and all-acrylic latexes for durable coatings. Expert has made research contributions to clear coatings for automotive use.

Expert has had first-hand experience with all the major categories of coatings and has published research and/or obtained patents on most of them. As a "coatings generalist" he can offer perspective on the selection of coatings for most end uses.

He is widely known for his published research in low-solvent coatings, especially on high-solids and solvent-free coatings. He has been active in this area almost since 1967, when air pollution regulation of coatings first began to take effect.

He has recent, successful experience in litigation support for product liability and intellectual property disputes in the field of coatings. He has recent successful experience in litigation support regarding product liability and intellectual property disputes. He has successfully determined the causes of coating failures in commercial and litigation situations. Has provided commercial solutions.

He has served as expert witness in coating liability cases in 2006, 2007, and 2008. The law firms seemed pleased with the outcomes.
