For over 30 years, Expert has been actively involved in the teaching and research of crystalline polymers. His focus has varied over time, but includes microstructure determination, crystallinity, crystal growth, mechanical properties, and general structure-property relationships. Specific systems considered include polyethylene, polyoxymethylene (polyacetal), polyesters and copolyesters (polybutylene terephthalate), crystalline blends, and others.

Expert has been actively involved in teaching and research in multicomponent polymer systems, particularly those containing crystalline polymers. His particular topics of interest include amorphous phase behavior (i.e. miscibility/immiscibility), crystallization and melting, and microstructure. A large number of techniques have been brought to bear on these problems, including dielectric thermal analysis, microscopy, and scattering techniques (e.g. x-ray). He also has taught a two-day workshop in this area at several companies.

Expert has been exploring the properties and performance of polyurethanes and poly(ether urethaneureas) for use in cardiac assist and other biomedical devices. Specifically, his focus has been on the design and characterization of new comb polymers with improved barrier properties; the influence of molecular architecture on mechanical (e.g. fatigue crack propagation resistance) and other properties of PEUU's; and the relationship between microphase-separated structure. In a separate program, Expert has also explored the structure and properties of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in orthopedic devices.

For a number of years Expert has been interested in structure-property relationships of electroactive polymer composites. Early work in this area centered on the piezo- and pyroelectric character of polymer-electroceramic composites while more recently the emphasis has been on polymer conductor (carbon black, metal oxides, etc.) mixtures, particularly on the origin of the large PTC effects observed in such systems.

Expert has extensive experience in the application of a wide variety of thermal analysis techniques to polymers and polymer composites (including polymer blends and block copolymers). His primary emphasis has been in using dielectric thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). His areas of study have generally included dielectric properties of polymers and polymer blends and melting and crystallization via DSC. He also has taught various short courses in this area.
