Expert has developed fundamental molecularbased models for the Gibbs free energy of fluids (liquids and gases) and their mixtures, and is intimately familiar with most existing expressions used for the chemical potentials of their constituents. This includes equationofstatebased approaches founded on the van der Waals, RedlichKwong, PengRobinson, and other state equations. He has developed efficient computational techniques to predict phase equilibria for complex multicomponent systems, including vaporliquid and liquidliquid equilibria, vapor pressure lines, and critical points. He has also applied these techniques to problems involving acidbase and other solution equilibria arising in problems involving electrolytes. He has developed general computational techniques for combined chemical reaction and phase equilibrium in complex multiphase systems, and he is the senior author of a textbook in this area. Expert has written PCbased software to solve problems in this field, marketed by Expert's Firm.


Expert has taught thermodynamics to engineers for a number of years, and is senior author of a textbook on the thermodynamic analysis of chemical reaction and phase equilibrium problems. He has applied thermodynamic analyses to evaluate processes in a number of areas, including several arising in the modeling of pollution abatement in environmental problems. He has developed a thermodynamic property database that is used in conjunction with his commercial chemical equilibrium software.


Much of Expert's research involves the development and efficient computer implementation of numerical analysis techniques to problems arising in a science and engineering context. The emphasis has been on nonlinear programming and optimization methods and theory; this includes global methods, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. Expert has extensive experience in curve fitting problems arising in situations where the underlying parameters must be estimated from a model. This includes the application of least squares and general linear and nonlinear regression techniques. Expert has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in all the above areas.


Expert has taught courses in all the above areas in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering departments for more than 25 years. Much of his research involves the regular use of techniques in these areas. He is proficient in derivatives, differentiation, imaginary numbers, inflection point, Laplace transform, and probability.


Expert has developed mathematical models of physical, chemical, engineering, and biological processes in his research. Many of these models incorporate systems of ordinary differential equations. Examples of biological models Expert has developed are models applied to biochemical kinetics, pharmacokinetics, and endocrinology.


Expert regularly uses computer algebra systems in his research, including Mathematica and Maple. He is also familiar with Derive and MathCad.


A main thrust of Expert's research program for over 25 years has involved the development of theories and computational methods for the structural and thermodynamic properties of fluids using the techniques of statistical mechanics. The main approaches have been perturbation theory, integral equation, and computer simulation techniques (Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics) in this area. Expert and his associates have recently developed successful tools to deal with chemical engineering systems involving associated fluids and their mixtures, whose properties are among the most difficult to predict theoretically.
