Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

SPACE ENVIRONMENT; SPACECRAFT CHARGING; NUCLEAR HARDENING; RADIATION HARDENING. As a physicist in industry, Expert has been productive in many fields associated with the effects of nuclear radiation and space environments. He has been technically responsible for hardening more than six space systems for the effects of both natural and nuclear radiation. Technologies in which expertise was required included spacecraft charging, EMP and SGEMP, micrometeoroid damage, radiation transport and shielding, radiation noise in infrared sensors, single event upset (SEU), and the effects of radiation on materials and on semiconductor devices. From the diversity of disciplines in which Expert has worked and from an understanding of the functions of the equipment affected by radiation, a system perspective to the solution of problems has evolved.

SINGLE EVENT UPSET (SEU). Expert was the co-discoverer of the fact that galactic cosmic rays cause upsets in the digital logic of spacecraft, and he has been active in developing methods of simulation and prediction of the effect. He has written system design criteria to mitigate the effects of SEU which have been implemented, and he has audited systems for compliance with the requirements. He has designed and performed cyclotron tests to characterize the SEU of piece parts and derived methods for calculating rates for upsets in space which have been confirmed with flight data. Expert has been a member of the team developing the CREME96 program for calculating SEU environments and effects.

Expert's activities have varied from the calculation of relative damage to silicon by neutrons, to development of hardness assurance programs and to experimental and analytical nuclear reactor physics.
