He is very knowledgeable of extrusion, pultrusion, compounding, injection molding, and reactive processing. PEL's experience in the plastics industry ranges from resin and film manufacture to consumer products, transportation, and aerospace.

As Head of Polymer Research and Development at TRW, Expert was responsible for product and process development, program management, and business procurement. He worked with high-performance polymers, composites, coatings, adhesives, conductive and reinforced plastics, and materials support for missile development. Materials used in this work include thermosets (epoxies, phenolics), high-performance polymers (polyimides), and elastomers (silicones, EPDM), as well as fibers of graphite, Kevlar, and glass. In this capacity, Expert used such processes as compounding, extrusion, autoclave, hot press lamination, filament winding, and compression molding.

Expert developed and patented novel alloys and blends with superior cost and performance benefits. These materials have attained significant commercial success. Other consulting activities offered by Expert include polymer product and market development; polymer processing and scale-up; and polymer technology transfer and strategic planning. Expert introduced new engineering plastic compounds with improved productivity and processability. He managed the technical aspects of construction of compounding lines to manufacture the products developed.

While at Polysar, Expert spearheaded entry into the engineering plastics business by developing concepts and successfully demonstrating their technical and business advantages.

Expert was on the DuPont team that developed Kapton polyimide film. Four publications resulted from this work including issues such as precursor polyamide acid synthesis and optimization of polymerization conditions, conversion to polyimides, and structure-property relationships of polyimide films. Subsequently, Expert has guided work on the development of partially fluorinated polyimides.

Expert has done extensive work with PET, including characterization in solution and morphology studies by laser light scattering. Recently, Expert has made contributions to PET recycling and the development of PET blends with polycarbonate, polypropylene, nylon, and toughened grades modified with Kraton. Two publications, a Gordon Conference presentation, and two patents resulted from this work.

Expert has conducted extensive research and development work on plastic films including films of PET, polyimide, polyvinyl fluoride, polycarbonate, polypropylene, nylon, and barrier composites. Some of this work involved film orientation and its relation to process variables, structure, and properties. This work has benefited aerospace, packaging, electrical/electronic, construction, and adhesives applications.

Expert has significant experience with biodegradable polymers, especially polylactic acid. He is familiar with a variety of technologies used to upgrade these materials, the features of commercially available biodegradable polymers, and possible ways to develop new ones.
