Expert has more than 40 years of practical experience in domestic and international agriculture. He has solved complex plant pathological problems in Central and South America, Mexico, and Africa. He has also served as an Agricultural Consultant in Armenia. His emphasis in international agriculture has been on implementing non-chemical disease and insect management. He has also helped develop plant diagnostic laboratories.

While on the faculty of Va. Polytechnic Institute Expert was responsible for testing new fungicides against diseases of woody nursery ornamentals. This involved working closely with representatives of manufacturers of agriculture chemicals. He also was involved with the USDA sponsored IR-4 program. Since retiement in 1988, he has continued to test new fungicides provided by IR-4 against diseases prevalent in the forest nursery industry.

During his 34 years in plant pathology, Expert has placed a major emphasis on plant diseases caused by fungal pathogens. He has concentrated on soil-borne fungi with a special interest in genera of water mold fungi like Phytophthora and Pythium.


While on the faculty of Oregon State University, Expert's research activities were centered on fungal diseases of bulb crops. At Texas A&M from 1960 to 1963, his extension plant pathology responsibilities involved soil-borne diseases of cotton and field crops caused by fungi. Expert's four-year extension activities at Iowa State University were directed at foliar and root diseases of corn and soybeans caused by fungi. From 1967 to 1988, his extension specialist activities at VPI & SU included diagnosing and recommending controls for fungal diseases of herbaceous and woody ornamentals and vegetables.




Expert's career work at major universities in the US and his recent plant pathology volunteer work in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Bolivia, and Ecuador has been directed at developing management programs to prevent plant diseases. He has also worked as a volunteer with funded organizations like International Executive Services Corporation (IESC) and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (VOCA) to develop preventative programs based on non-pesticide control. He served as a Visiting Professor at Instituto Tecnologico Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico for 17 months on a Fulbright Fellowship teaching plant disease prevention to senior-level students in agronomy. He has served as a technician in the Department of Plant Pathology Plant Disease Clinic at Oregon State University (OSU). He was also employed as a Junior Plant Pathologist at OSU conducting research on the diseases of lily bulbs.

Throughout his career, Expert has been responsible for developing and managing disease diagnostic laboratories. He served as a volunteer to government-funded universities and private agronomic laboratories in Latin America and Mexico to help upgrade the diagnostic services provided to all areas of commercial agriculture.

As a Fulbright Lecturer in Mexico for 17 months Expert was responsible for teaching senior level students in agronomy and testing marigolds in the field for fungus disease resistance and xanophyll content in their flowers. Marigold flower samples were analyzed by a qualitative laboratory in Mexico and also by a laboratory in the U.S. for xanthophyll pigments useful in the pigmentation of chickens and eggs.

Expert has successfullty separated different species of the flowering plant Papaver. His under graduate training was in the field of botany with emphasis on taxonomy. He was employed by Virginia Tech University for 21 years as a plant pathologist in the area of diseases of shrubs and flowers.
