Expert has experience measuring and characterizing friction in ceramic, polymer, metal, solid lubricant, and composite systems, including systems modification to reduce the coefficient of friction. Expert also has experience calculating the heat generated in sliding friction as well as developing ways to dissipate it.

A significant portion of Expert's career has been focused on researching the use of elastomers in friction and wear applications. He has studied their use in systems where abrasive and erosive wear mechanisms are operational. Expert has designed and built custom devices for testing in these applications.

Expert is active in research in the area of coatings for advanced wear applications that include the use of diamond-like and superhard materials. Expert has designed state-of-the-art testing equipment for superhard coatings that includes vacuum environments. He has focused primarily on cutting tool applications, having studied cubic boron nitride based PVD coatings.

A key area of Expert's expertise is in the use of polymers for friction and wear applications. He has experience with high-temperature thermoplastic and thermoset matrices, as well as composites of carbon and glass fibers. In addition, Expert has considerable knowledge of selecting the proper polymer or metal for specific friction and wear application where cost, performance, or reliability are the chief concerns.

One of Expert's major research awards (from the National Science Foundation) involved fatigue wear, material transfer, and surface enhancement of polymers and polymeric composites.

Expert has primary level expertise in selecting and using polymers, ceramics, metals, and composites for design applications where friction and wear prevention are a major concern. He has knowledge of design aspects associated with boundary lubrication, mixed/EHL, and hydrodynamic lubrication applications.

Expert has experience in optimizing friction and wear performance for biomedical devices that incorporate moving mechanical assemblies where friction and wear are major concerns. The design issues of most importance to Expert include reliability, tissue/blood compatibility, and performance enhancement. One of his major research awards had been for the tribological investigation of plasma separation devices.

Expert has experience in the use and selection of solid and liquid lubricants in conjunction with sliding materials to achieve the desired values of friction. This involves the use of test equipment to fully characterize the sliding friction of a lubricant package over a wide range of operating conditions. The intent here was to devise a friction "package" with a high level of insensitivity to changes in external operating conditions.

Expert has experience in the design of sliding pairs to minimize the formation of adhesive junctions through proper anti-seize compound selection. He has used surface modification techniques and alternative material selection to reduce galling tendencies.


Expert has experience testing the friction properties of various lubricants as a function of temperature. This includes the assessment of the relative merit of a particular boundary lubricant additive or solid lubricant formulation as a function of temperature.

Expert has investigated the effects of solid lubricants on sliding friction both in atmospheric and vacuum conditions. In addition, he is familiar with many types of commercially-available solid lubricant formulations for high-temperature applications.

Expert has experience in developing advanced mechanical characterization methods for polymer and organic coatings and thin-films. This includes the use of state-of-the-art nano-indentation and scratch testing equipment as well as advanced finite element modeling of the indentation and scratching process. This work is especially suited to materials which exhibit non-linear material properties, in the visco-elastic/plastic regimes. Expert is also applying these methods to coatings during the curing phase, such as in paints and other protective finishes.
