Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
Expert has over 20 years of industrial experience in the design, synthesis, and process development of biopolymers and water soluble polymers based on cellulose, guar, pectin, and chitin, which have led to new or improved products and applications in coatings, associative thickeners, drug release capsules, cosmetics, and food.

Expert's work to obtain a PhD in organic chemistry concentrated on the synthesis of carbohydrate derivatives such as monosaccharide and disaccharide osazones and osotriazoles. These derivatives are valuable for identifying sugars and also can be used as pro drugs, dyes, insecticides, and other products. His postdoctoral experience in this field is over five years at institutions such as The Ohio State University, Purdue University, and the University of Montana. He accomplished synthesis 3-deoxyaldosuloses (Browning Reaction), saccharide 1,2,3-triazole by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition from acetylenic and azido precursors. His work at Purdue University included the photolysis of sugars and amino acids, aroma from starches and the synthesis of biologically active nucleosides. At the University of Montana, Expert worked on the thermal analysis and pyrolysis of glycosides, deoxy sugars, and amino sugars to better understand the pyrolytic reaction of carbohydrates and the combustion of cellulosic materials.

Expert has obtained the disaccharide maltose and the trisaccharide maltotriose by enzymic hydrolysis of starch. He is familiar with maltitol and cellobiotol as additives in low-caloric formulations. He has obtained other sugar alcohols such as sorbitol and mannitol by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding monosaccharides glucose and mannose.

Expert has extensive experience working with a variety of natural sweeteners, including sugars such as sucrose (table sugar) from sugar beet or cane sugars and honey, dextrose (glucose, sugar syrup) obtained by acid and enzyme hydrolysis of starches, and high-fructose syrup obtained from glucose syrup. His work at G.D. Searle & Co. New Venture is (now Nutrasweet Company) involved bulking agents, non-caloric beta linked disaccharide alcohol, and other polysaccharides. He was one of the first to reveal that L-sugars are as sweet as the D-sugars without the calories. He synthesized monoglyceric acid fatty acid esters (found in pumpkins) as natural antimicrobial agents.
