As a routine part of a failure analysis, Expert uses fracture mechanics to ascertain the magnitude of the stresses present. He develops data necessary to perform fracture mechanics from the use of common metallurgical tools such as visual examination, metallography, scanning electron microscopy, Auger analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and micro-hardness testing. He finds that fracture mechanics are very useful in failures involving fatigue. He will use fracture mechanics when no other methods are available for determining the fracture toughness of a material. He has used fracture mechanics in the evaluation of both metals and non-metals.
