Expert has over 30 years of experience with the wear of materials in industrial applications. He is familiar with most forms of wear and with the wear behavior of most materials. He is the author of over 60 publications concerned with various aspects of wear and friction including two books on wear. He has been the editor of several books and conference proceedings on wear. His new book (see Selected Publications) is concerned with the development of wear resistant designs and the resolution of wear problems in industrial applications. He has been responsible for ensuring adequate wear life in new machines and the resolution of wear problems in existing equipment. He is well acquainted with a variety of wear prevention methods.

Throughout his extensive industrial career, he has had responsibility for selecting materials for wear applications. This involved the evaluation, comparison, and in some cases, the development of a wide range of coatings and coating processes. He has published several papers concerning the friction and wear behavior of different types of coatings including polymers, elastomers, metal platings, and ion coatings. He was the editor of a book concerned with wear tests for evaluating coatings.

Expert has considerable experience with several abrasive wear situations. He has been responsible for developing solutions to wear problems resulting from abrasive particle contamination and abrasive media such as magnetic tapes, paper, and fabrics. He investigated the effects of various parameters on wear in these situations, selecting materials to resist abrasive wear. He developed tests to evaluate materials and characterize abrasive environments and media as well as failure analyses of worn components. He has written several papers concerning the effects of abrasive size, hardness and quantity on wear, the evaluation of materials for different abrasive wear situations, and models for wear in these situations. He can answer complex questions related to metal, polymer, and rubber abrasive wear.

He has experience selecting materials and other design parameters to minimize adhesive wear.

Expert has studied the wear and friction behavior of electrical contacts used in electronic equipment and the overall reliability of connector systems used in these applications. He has experience with contact behavior during insertion and extraction and under vibration or fretting conditions, publishing nine papers on these topics. These studies have involved developing and selecting platings for contact systems and selecting lubricants for these applications, as well as evaluating the effects of load, geometry, and motion on wear life. He has been responsible for reliability evaluation of contact systems including the effects of hostile environments and use.

Expert has expertise in the failure analysis of mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic equipment with respect to such failure modes as wear, fracture, fatigue, and corrosion. However, being an internationally known tribologist, his most extensive experience is with the failure analysis of warn parts. In addition to directing numerous failure analyses during his career at IBM, he managed several analytical laboratories whose primary function was failure analysis.

With his experience in wear, expert can provide insight into its relationship to the durability of equipment, components, and materials. Most of his career at IBM has involved selecting and developing tests for durability of electromechanical, mechanical, and electronic equipment with respect to such failure modes as wear, fatigue, fracture, corrosion, and the aging of materials.

Throughout his career at IBM, expert was responsible for resolving fretting wear problems. He recommended materials and design parameters to resolve these problems and developed tests to simulate and evaluate fretting wear in different applications. He is knowledgeable of the effects of fretting motions on the wear produced by sliding, rolling, and impact.

Expert has performed hundreds of sliding friction measurements under dry and boundary lubrication conditions for industrial applications involving metals, plastics, elastomers, ceramics, and coatings. He has studied the effects of load, geometry, surface topography, lubrication, and other parameters on the coefficient of friction of different material couples. Often these friction studies and measurements were in conjunction with an evaluation of wear behavior. He has published models for the coefficient of friction of paper and fabrics, as well as tables of the coefficient of friction of various combinations. He can answer in-depth questions related to rubber, sliding, static, and limiting friction.

While at IBM, he has been responsible for recommending and selecting materials and design parameters to eliminate galling and other severe modes of wear. He has been active in the ASTM committee which developed a standard test method for evaluating galling resistance of material couples.

Expert has had responsibility for developing and selecting lubricants and lubrication processes for a variety of wear situations. He has done failure analyses of systems where failure resulted from lubricant contamination, starvation, and degradation. He has conducted aging, degradation, and compatibility studies of lubricants and is the author of several papers regarding aspects of dry and boundary lubrication. He published several papers related to surface-fatigue wear in sliding and impact wear situations. He has been the developer of co-developer of several engineering models for wear that are based on surface-fatigue wear concepts.

Expert has experience with developing and selecting tests to evaluate wear behavior for material selection and estimating field life. As a past chairman of ASTM's. Wear and Erosion Committee, he has extensive knowledge of standard wear tests and methods. He is an editor of five books and author of several papers on wear testing. He has extensive experience in selecting design parameters to obtain desired wear performance.

As a recognized leader in the development of engineering models and their use in design and problem solving, expert is the author or co-author of models of broad applicability such as those for sliding and impact wear and models for specific applications. These models provide analytical relationships between wear and various material and design parameters, including usage. In addition to being the author of over 70 papers and presentations on this aspect of tribology, he is the author of two books on this subject.

As an independent consultant the expert has consulted on wide variety of industrial equipment & applications. This has included bio-medical, food processing, engines, earth moving, and sewage treatment applications, among others.
