His rheological work is extensively quoted in the Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Engineering 14, (1988, p 456-458). Having directed a water soluble polymer applications laboratory for more than 15 years, Expert has developed many novel products and applications by his practical application of rheological principles to real-world problems. An internationally known rheologist, Expert has reviewed over 100 published papers in the area of slurry rheology and flow behavior measurements. Expert is a member of the ASTM Committee D-1, Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications. He has published a novel paper entitled "Hair Conditioning by a Chemical Comb" in which the flow behavior of water soluble polymers plays a key role in the hair conditioning action. Expert has also published an article entitled, "Estimation of Molecular Weight Error for Concentration Uncertainties in the Intrinsic Viscosity Determination" and copyrighted the "Viscosity Calculator Slide Rule for the Brookfield Synchro-Lectric Viscometer."

Expert has presented an invited seminar at the 17th Mid-Atlantic Regional American Chemical Society Meeting (April 1983) entitled "An Introduction to Rheological Characterization of Non-Newtonian Fluids and Some Practical Applications." At the National Meeting of the Society for Cosmetic Chemists he presented "Principles of Applied Rheology" (December 1982). At the Applied Rheology for Industrial Chemists Symposium (Kent State University), Expert presented "Characterization of Non-Newtonian Fluids- An Industrial Viewpoint."

In his capacity as Development Engineer for Union Carbide Corporation, with responsibility for World Wide Technical Support, Expert provided outstanding technical support and problem solving for hundreds of major corporations. He has developed major new consumer applications for polyethylene oxide including improved lubricity of the Gillette Razor Shaving Strip. This work involved stable, rapidly-dissolving slurries of polyethylene oxide and aqueous-based lubricants for the clay-steel interface. His work with Procter and Gamble in Europe culminated with the introduction of a significantly improved detergent product, popular all across Europe. Expert was also a consultant on "Rapid Water," a novel high-molecular weight polymer product useful for reducing the drag of water in fire fighting hoses. Expert has consulted on the development and application of novel hydrogel systems used for growing plants, as "second skin" as well as for water soluble packaging for insecticides and detergents.

Expert has reviewed and summarized over 25 years of the technical literature on high molecular weight non-ionic polymers (ie poly ethylene oxide). His work resulted in a major revamping and reissue of all of the worldwide technical advertising literature on Union Carbide Corporation's POLYOX water soluble resins, including handling, applications, safety, and toxicological aspects.

Expert has directed laboratory and field development programs. These included new high-molecular weight poly(acrylamide) and poly(ethylene oxide) flocculants for industrial clay dispersions, taconite ore, and phosphatic slimes. In the latter area, Expert was closely associated with development efforts of the United States Bureau of Mines. His work in the environmental aspects of mining area was the basis for his appointment as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Chemistry (London).

Expert has invented a new use and process for binding mineral ores using liquid poly(acrylamide) polymers. He managed a staff of four in a two-year lab/field product development program and successfully optimized complex multivariable performance properties while developing a novel pelletizing process for Taconite Ore. This process was commercially adapted on a large industrial scale by the Erie Mining Company, the second largest mining company in the US. He also managed a 5-year lab/field development program for the use and application of new poly(acrylamide) and poly(ethylene oxide) high-molecular weight polymers for the flocculation and clean up of phosphatic waste slimes in Florida.

Expert has consulted on the effect of silicone surfactants as flame retardants for polyurethane foam. He also conducted research on improved fuel combustion. He has developed silicone surface active additives for increasing fuel combustion efficiency. Expert has conducted applied research in many novel applications of silicone surface active agents. He has studied and optimized the stability and flow behavior of silicone emulsions.

Expert holds patents in the area of slurry pumping and slurry spraying, including "Slurries of Polyethylene Oxide," "Rapidly Dissolved Water Soluble Polymer Composition" (US Patent 4325861), and "Process for Forming Ceramic Bodies Employing Aqueous Lubricants" (US Patent 4171337).

Expert holds patents related to thermoplastic resins and plasticizers. He has worked with a blend of water-soluble and water-insoluble polymers which form inter-penetrating networks. This work includes blends of water-soluble, high-molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) and polyethylene, which produce novel packaging films with hydrophilic properties.

Expert has studied and developed aqueous, fire fighting foams that are widely used today for commercial and military hydrocarbon fires. These foams are used for aircraft crashes at major civilian and military airports. He has been an Adjunct Professor at Westchester Community College and trained firefighters in the chemistry and physics of foam science. Expert is a member of the National Fire Protection Association and was a former member of the Fire Fighting Foam Subcommittee, a Standards making body for the industry. He is also a member of the ASTM D-26 Committee on Fire Extinguishing Agents and holds two patents on fire extinguishing foams: "Method of Extinguishing Fires And Composition Containing Cationic Silicone Surfactants" (US 3677347) and "Method of Extinguishing Liquid Hydrocarbon Fires And Compositions Therefore Comprising Silicone Surfactants" (US Patent 3621917).

Expert has done extensive research and development in the area of antifoams. He holds patents on "Non-Aqueous Antifoam Compositions," (US Patent 4101442) "Transient Antifoams," (US Patent 4101443) and "Self-Dispersible Antifoam Compositions" (US Patent 4076648). He has also published on the area of antifoams in the Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemistry. Expert has developed antifoams for a variety of markets and is familiar with the needs of the detergent industry regarding antifoams for front loading washing machines.

Expert holds patents in the area of high-molecular weight non-ionic and onionic polymers and their behavior at interfaces. He was a key idea generator for a group of PhD chemists and guided the synthesis of new molecules for novel applications of silicone surface active agents and polymers.

Expert developed stable liquid color toners for a 3-dimensional Xerox process under grant from the Naval Weapons Test Laboratory. Having spent many years studying the fundamental properties of finely divided materials, Expert has become an expert at making a variety of materials stable. He uses rheological techniques to measure the key properties to produce this result. He has published numerous articles and authored a chapter in the book "Flocculation and Dewatering." He can answer questions on rheometers, capillary rheometers; Brookfield viscometers; Ostwald viscometers; and falling sphere viscometers.
