His emphasis is on interrelationships that exist in the processing cycle, and their manipulation to advantage, between composition, structure, and properties.

A professor of materials science and engineering/ceramic engineering, Expert teaches a variety of courses on advanced ceramic materials. These courses cover topics such as ceramic materials and properties, ceramic processing, dielectric ceramics, electrical ceramics, ceramic microscopy, and hybrid circuits. Expert also conducts an extensive research program on advanced electrical ceramics, which includes areas such as synthesis, crystal growth, processing, microstructure-property relations of ferroelectrics, antiferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, capacitors, superconductors, and magnetoresistance.

Expert has over 10 years industrial experience and 36 years academic research activity on ceramic capacitors, including high voltage, disc, tube, multilayer, and thin layer. He is very familiar with manufacturing methods, testing, and reliability issues.

Expert has established a research facility for ferroelectric and related materials--piezoelectrics, pyroelectrics, and electrostriction--with dielectric measurement and characterization capability as a function of temperature, voltage, frequency, and other variables. Expert's research group pioneered the deposition of ferroelectric thin films by sol-gel processing methods over 25 years ago. Since then, they have investigated many materials and dielectric issues, including size and scale effects, and the role of residual stress on properties.

Expert is leading a research group on the sol-gel processing of electrical and optical ceramics. The group has carried out sol-gel processing of thin-layers and bulk ceramics for optical and electrical/magnetic applications. He has established a materials chemistry laboratory, with synthesis, processing, and characterization capability. Other areas of his expertise include the synthesis of metallo-organic precursors, polymeric sol-gel processing, thermal conversion to metal oxides, and stress measurements.

Expert established a crystal growth laboratory for ferroelectric, electrooptic, piezoelectric, and superconducting materials. His facilities include high-temperature crystal growth equipment, flux, and hydrothermal methods. He has experience with a wide range of materials and methods.

Expert has over 50 years experience in ceramic materials and processing. He is an expert on electrical ceramics and has received numerous awards. He has both industrial and academic experience, and is active in the American Ceramic Society, having held all positions in the Electronics Division, including past Chair. Expert directs an electrical ceramics research program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has published nearly 300 papers and12 patents, and graduated 60 Ph.D. and M.S. graduate students. Most of the research has been involved with advanced materials processing through the use of new and improved starting materials and the control of microstructure. He is an expert on structure-property relations. In the past decade he has pioneered the chemical-solution processing of ferroelectric thin films at greatly reduced temperatures, which has led to materials integration with semiconductors and new products. Other notable achievements by his research group include the crystal growth of highly efficient piezoelectric materials, and novel methods of additive patterning by microcontact printing with self-assembled monolayers. Expert continues to be at the forefront of developments in advanced materials processing of electrical ceramics and is a consultant to industry.
