Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert has spent 37 years in almost every aspect of this field. Precision engineering covers precision machine tool and measuring machine design; and their construction, accuracy evaluation, and operation. Expert has experience with designing instruments for land surveying, machine alignment, circuit boards, astronomy, medicine, and high-energy physics. His expertise in precision engineering may be called upon whenever the tolerances are perceived to be difficult, expensive, or even impossible to achieve.

Expert has extensive experience in dimensional metrology. He has designed and built a wide variety of measuring machines and gages and developed detailed procedures for their evaluation.

Expert was responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the world's largest diamond turning machine. The machine has a swing of 96 inches, and can turn or bore over a length of 44 inches. It weighs 120 tons, has a resolution of .5 microinches, and a volumetric accuracy of 4 microinches. Expert is equally interested in the design, construction, and evaluation of conventional accuracy machine tools.

Expert has worked with interferometers for most of his professional career. He is the inventor of a special technique for liquid sealing of interferometer pathways so they can be back-filled with helium to minimize the refractive index.

Expert has extensive experience with optical devices for dimensional metrology. He is the author of the appendix on optical instruments in ANSI Standard B-46, "Surface Texture."

Expert's most important achievement has been his research on thermal effects errors. Thermal effects are generally the largest source of error in precision engineering. Expert is the inventor of the liquid shower system for creating thermal stability in machine tools and measuring machines.
