Some of his prior work has centered on the design and appraisal of transformer insulation structures, with particular emphasis on oil/cellulose systems. This work has involved both fundamental research on mechanistic aspects and the implications for design. He has been involved with transformer failure analysis and the development and application of computer-based design tools and diagnostic instrumentation.

Research on the behavior of dielectric materials (gas, liquid, and solid) has been carried out by him for over 40 years. His objective is to improve performance through design. He maintains that knowledge of the mechanisms of conduction and breakdown is fundamental to informed dielectric engineering. Much of this applies to the high-voltage and power industries, and he has worked with the Electric Power Research Institute on the evaluation of insulation systems for large form-wound generators. However, the expertise has also been applied in many other areas involving high electric stresses such as medical devices.

He has used applications of the physics and chemistry of dielectric materials to investigate both the use of new (or modified) materials and the appraisal of insulation structural design. He has gained experience specifically in mixed dielectric situations involving gas, liquid, and solid (usually polymer) media as well as in vacuum environments. In 2002, he was the first to experimentally demonstrate the benefits of a new class of materials now known as nanodielectrics. He has been active in the development of these materials ever since, and put together the first book on the subject in 2010 [J.K. Expert, "Dielectric Polymer Nanocomposites" , Springer, 2010]

Previously, he had conducted research to investigate the physics controlling the development of discharges in SF6 gas. The development of gas additives to control corona stabilization in gases has been of particular interest. This augments many years of experience in the measurement and understanding of partial discharge behavior.

He has extensive experience in electrostatic phenomena both as a means to provide useful devices (e.g. precipitators) and to mitigate troublesome triboelectric effects. In the later context, he has specialized in streaming electrification in dielectric fluids and has developed instrumentation to detect hazardous situations.

There is a great deal of current interest in the management of insulations systems which are aging. Consequently, he has become very involved with both the development and use of a variety of monitoring techniques applied to dielectric systems. Examples are partial discharge analysis and high frequency spectrum analysis, the use of ultrasonic probes, spectrally-resolved optical techniques, and computer-based intelligence applied to the interpretation of such monitoring methods.

Beard Award, GE Patent Award, the Japan Soc Science Fellowship, the IEEE Whitehead Lecturer, Tropper Lecturer, and Ziyu Liu Memorial Lecturer. The IEE of Japan awarded him the Inuishi award, and the Edison Electric Institute their Educator Award. Other awards include the ASNT Fellowship Award, the IEEE Forster Award, and the IEEE Millennium Medal.
