EXTRACORPOREAL MEMBRANE OXYGENATION (ECMO). Expert is an ECMO Program Director and has extensive experience with neonates, pediatric, and adult patient management. He has a longstanding interest in venovenous gas exchange. He helped develop the double lumen venovenous cannula. He is currently interested in all aspects of ECMO-related research and development. He is working closely with industry to improve intracorporeal gas exchange devices and is conducting clinical trials.

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY. Expert is an expert in cardiothoracic surgery and critical care. His special interests are extracorporeal and intracorporeal circulation and oxygenation and severe respiratory failure.

ESOPHAGEAL DISEASE. He is experienced in multiple modality treatment of resectable esophageal cancer using preoperative radiation therapy and chemotherapy followed by esophageal resection.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE; RESPIRATORY SYSTEM DISEASE. Expert is experienced in clinical and experimental ischemic heart disease including aortic homograft and mitral valve repair, valvular heart disease, and multiple modality adjuvant therapy for resectable stage II and III non-small cell lung cancer (SWOG). He is also experienced in the use of an intravascular oxygenator (IVOX) for acute respiratory failure. He is also experienced in resternotomy and pulmonary neoplasms.

THORACIC SURGERY; CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS (CPB). Expert is active at Texas University as a cardiothoracic surgeon. He has conducted research on the technology, biomaterials, physiology, management, and complications of cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

CRITICAL CARE MONITORING DEVICES. Expert is board certified in critical care. He is experienced with the technology, biomaterials, physiologic parameters, patient safety, and efficacy of monitoring devices to aid critical care.

Expert has experience in cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. It refers to the placement of the patient onto extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. This device takes blood from the body, oxygenates via a machine and then returns it to the systemic circulation under pressure. This allows the surgeon adequate time to perform primary heart surgery on a temporarily nonfunctioning heart.
