Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
Expert is an authority on cellulose fibers, cellulose derivatives, and especially cellulose solvents. Expert has written several book chapters on these subjects and has consulted major companies worldwide in these areas for the last five years. His original paper on cellulose solvents has been quoted extensively as a reference for all subsequent publications in this area of technology. Expert wrote a chapter on cellulose solvents that was published in England.

Expert has written two books for TAPPI on this subject that have been adopted by several colleges as a prime text for course work in the field. He has been the National Publication Chairman for the Nonwovens Division of TAPPI for the last five years and has published an advanced symposium on nonwovens that he chaired for the American Chemical Society.

Other technologies with which Expert is familiar are natural and synthetic polymers, textiles, paper, organic synthesis, food packaging, laminates, coatings, viscose technology, plastics extrusion, membranes and filtration, collagen films and fibers, paper, pulping, microencapsulation, and geotextiles. He has worked on the development of dyes for polypropylenes and the development of polypropylene into a textile fiber.

Expert has excellent knowledge of chemical reactions and also reaction mechanisms. This was the major part of his Ph.D. training, which has been employed in industry to invent new chemical reactions, i.e. controlled sulfonation techniques by use of the SO3/phosphate complexes.

Expert has detailed knowledge of cotton fiber physical and chemical properties, purification, cotton fiber abnormalities, species, photomicrography, and reaction accessibility. His M.S. thesis was on determining why fabrics and knits produced "tiger stripes" upon mercerizing treatments with caustic.

Expert has excellent background in dye synthesis, dye application, dye stabilities, and dye testing.

Expert has given expert testimony on dye application techniques in several law cases. He is one of only five or six Fellows of the Royal Society of Dyers and Colorists (of England) in the United States.

As Professor and Director of the prestigious School of Polymer and Textile Engineering at Georgia Tech, Expert taught classes in fabric technology and is well aware of most fabric structures, etc.

Of Expert's 94 U.S. patents, many pertain to polymer modification chemistry. One example is the production of the world's most efficient water thickener that was synthesized by making a very high molecular weight polystyrene and then modifying it by a novel sulfonation technique to get it to be a marvelous water thickener. Similarly, he consulted on the use of ethylene and propylene oxides to make water-soluble cellulose derivatives.

Expert notes that rayon, as prepared from viscose, is a regenerated fiber from cellulose solutions. He has over ten years experience both in research and manufacturing of such products and many years with worldwide peer acceptance as an expert in developing solvents for cellulose.

Expert has served as a consultant for several companies making water-soluble polymers both from natural and from synthetic sources.

As a former Director & Professor of the School of Polymers and Textile Engineering at Ga.Tech. He is very familiar with most areas of textile performance, including flammability. He has given consulting advice on flammability to a major supplier of flame retardant chemicals and to a carpet manufacturer . He has also been involved as an expert witness in a fabric flammability lawsuit on behalf of two major corporations.
