BIODEGRATION; WOOD DEGRADATION. Expert has been involved with the biological degradation of wood and cellulose for 40 years through research and teaching. Agents of deterioration include brown and white rot, wood-destroying fungi, molds and staining organisms, termites, and marine borers. The mechanisms of their action and the conditions under which they attack wood have been of special concern.

CELLULOSE. Expert has focused on all aspects of cellulose chemistry over the past 45 years of his research and teaching experience. Specifically, his research activities have included derivatization solution, regeneration, hydrolysis and degradation, papermaking, and isolation.

ETHANOL FUEL; FERMENTATIVE ETHANOL PRODUCTION. Expert's knowledge in this area stems from 15 years of research in the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose and its subsequent fermentation to ethanol for use as a chemical feedstock or fuel.

FIRE RESISTANT WOOD. He has spent 12 years in research and development on improved fire retardant treatments for wood. The so-called third generation of commercial fire retardant treatments are the result of that work. He has followed developments in this area and has served as an expert witness in litigation involving fire retardant treatments.

LIGNIN. In as much as wood is comprised of about 25% lignin, Expert has been concerned with various aspects of lignin chemistry. In addition to its dissolution in pulping and bleaching processes, he has also conducted research on the conversion of commercial lignins and lignin hydrolysis residues into chemicals, resins, and adhesives.

ORGANIC CHEMICALS FROM BIOMASS. Expert has been especially interested in the conversion of lignocellulosic material of plant origin into chemicals and liquid and gaseous fuels for over 15 years. He identifies this lignocellulosic material as agricultural residues, low grade wood, wood waste, and a large fraction of municipal solid waste. He has studied processes directed at both the unfractionated composite material and the component polymers such as cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin.

POLYSACCHARIDES. Insofar as cellulose comprises 50% of wood and hemicelluloses another 25%, Expert has broad experience in polysaccharide chemistry. He has also become familiar with the chemistry of starch and its derivatives as applied to papermaking.

RAYON. During his employment with a rayon yarn producer, Expert became familiar with the viscose process in particular and other cellulose based fibers in general.

WOOD. Expert has been involved in research and teaching in all aspects of the chemistry of wood and its constituent components for over 40 years. These include not only the polymeric structural components cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin, but also the extraneous components generally described as extractives.

WOOD PRESERVATION. Expert has had 12 years of experience in all aspects of wood preservation research and development, including protection against decay, insects, marine organisms, fire, dimensional change, and chemical attack. This work has encompassed treating processes and preservatives.

WOOD PRODUCTS; HARDBOARD; PLYWOOD; SYNTHETIC POLYMER. During his 40 year specialization in wood chemistry, Expert has necessarily become familiar with a broad range of wood products, especially those involving the combination of wood with synthetic polymers such as coatings and adhesives. Examples of these composites include laminated wood, plywood, particleboard, hardboard, fiberboard, and impregnated or compressed wood-plastic combinations.
