Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
DESIGN OF DC MOTORS. Expert has worked with DC motors nearly all of his life. For over 30 years at GE, he was responsible for the electrical design of their DC motors which ranged in size from 1-500 HP. As a part of his responsibilities, he helped write and improve GE's DC design analysis computer programs. He also worked on the design and application of larger size DC motors, which have ranged up to 4000 HP. He has been involved with several redesign programs and has issued several reports stemming from that work.

APPLICATION OF DC MOTORS. From 1984 to 1987, Expert was responsible for handling all non-standard applications for DC motors used in many different industries. These include low-inertia motors for leg carriage and cardboard cut-off machines, electric battery powered road vehicles, machine tools, paper machine pumps, and fork lift truck motors.

EFFECTS OF STATIC POWER SUPPLIES. Expert wrote a paper in 1965 quantifying the effects of AC ripple current on the performance of DC motors. That material is still used today in GE's product application manuals. He taught a class in 1986 which reviewed this material for new engineers at GE.

DC MOTOR VENTILATION AND HEAT LOSSES. Expert directed the tests that resulted in heating curves being measured for use with computer programs. With that information, he was able to predict temperature rise in DC motors. He has written reports on ventilation and heat losses in DC motors, and he continues to conduct and interpret tests to determine heat transfer constants useful in temperature rise equations. Expert has studied and applied motors with no ventilation to full blower ventilation and from class "A" systems to class "H" systems.

DC MOTORS IN CONTROL SYSTEMS. Expert taught a course on this subject using his knowledge of DC motors along with information he had picked up from taking two control systems courses. The material which he covered in those lectures has been modified and appears in a book entitled "Handbook of Electric Motors," issued in 1995.

PREDICTING THE MAXIMUM CAPABILITY OF "IN USE" DC MOTORS. Expert has been able to help customers by determining the maximum voltage, maximum speed, and maximum current that existing, in-use D.C. motors have so that they can be re-applied for different functions. This involves using his expertise in DC motor commutation prediction, mechanical stress calculations, and heat transfer and ventilation.
