His methods include metallurgical laboratory evaluations for the mode, sequence and cause of failure; fracture examination (fractography); and accident site examination. He uses these methods, plus metallography and microscopy, to study chemical composition and mechanical properties, metal overload, fatigue and corrosion, and hydrogen cracking or embrittlement. He provides expert witness testimony on metal product failures.

He is cognizant of welding codes, standards, and procedures promulgated by the AWS Structural Code, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and the military; with preheating and post-heating requirements; and with welding materials control methods.
