Expert has devoted most of his 35-year career to the application primarily of metals and other materials such as polymers, ceramics, composite materials, and electronic materials; he has also designed and manufactured machines and other structures. His expertise includes the areas of engineering analysis and laboratory testing. He is extremely knowledgeable regarding mechanical properties and mechanical testing of the above materials.
Expert spent the first 15 years of his engineering career in the machine tool industry (with Danly Machine) and still consults regularly for Danly and other machine tool manufacturers.
Expert been involved in developments in the container industry since 1968, having worked for Continental Can and U.S. Can. He maintains a consulting relationship with U.S. Can, both in terms of litigation defense and problem solving in welding and corrosion of aerosol cans.
Expert has owned and operated a scanning electron microscope equipped with an EDS system for the past seven years. He uses the SEM to examine fractured material surfaces in order to determine failure mode. Using the EDS system, he is able to analyze surfaces for elementary makeup.
Since 1980, Expert has been working in the independent laboratory field, initially for Packer Engineering. Currently, he performs the same duties for a firm he founded, Materials Engineering, Inc. He is knowledgeable regarding metallographic analysis, and metal failure analysis due to hydrogen embrittlement, strain aging, fatigue, and so on. He has solved problems in welding, machining, and forming. He is also conversant with surface hardening and diffusion bonding issues.
While at Continental Can, Expert was involved in managing projects to build aluminum can manufacturing lines in Glasgow, Scotland and Melbourne, Australia. During 1991-94, he managed an SBIR project for the DOT/FAA.
Expert is familiar with the various processes of metal forming and tooling design for forming metal. He is familiar with safe pressworking operations per ANSI and OSHA standards.
Expert is very familiar with the fabrication of sheet metal parts by spot welding, riveting, crimping, brazing, and laser welding.
Stamping metal by hydraulic and mechanical presses is another area of Expert's expertise. He has worked on calculations for tonnage requirements, safety issues, and tooling.
Expert has experience with fusion and diffusion welding processes for carbon steel, including stick electrode, TIG, MIG, laser, seam welding, and resistance spot welding. He has determined preheating and postheating requirements to minimize metallurgical changes.
Expert was recently involved in the development of a high-speed laser welding process for joining steel can ends to steel aerosol can bodies. This work was an SBIR project funded by the FAA to develop an aerosol can with improved fine safety for being transported in commercial aircraft cargo compartments. Expert has two U.S. Patents related to this development.
Expert is very familiar with the parameters of time, temperature, and pressure for making similar or dissimilar metal diffusion bonds. He is conversant with the Ficks Laws of Diffusion.
Expert has expertise with all existing heat treatment processes for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. He established a heat treatment department for a US company in Belgium.
Expert is knowledgeable of annealing processes for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including issues of time, temperatures, and furnace atmospheres.
He has worked with resistance spot welding processes for joining steel parts and is familiar with electrode degradation.
