Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

A leading expert on the evaluation of medical lexicons, Expert is the American representative to the international group developing the minimal standard terminology to digestive endoscopy and has a major grant to test it in the U.S.

The National Library of Medicine is preparing a large thesaurus of medical terms in order to agree on terms in the electronic medical record. This development is important in order for all professionals to communicate effectively. Expert has been developing and validating these terms for gastroenterology for 15 years. He currently is the recipient of a $100,000 grant to validate a new lexicon for GI Endoscopy.

As an academic gastroenterologist at a major teaching hospital, Expert has daily experience with clinical gastroenterology. He has research interests in the evaluation of new technology, computers in gastroenterology, tube and gastrostomy feeding, gastric emptying, bile acid metabolism, ERCP methods, endoscopic training and evaluation, and treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding. Other major research interests include natural history of peptic ulcer disease, the influence of ethanol on gastric emptying, mathematical chaos in the gastrointestinal tract, and intestinal glutamine metabolism.

Expert performed studies of investigational new devices (tubes and therapeutic devices) and drugs (H2 blockers, cytoprotective agents, prokinetic agents) for over ten years.

As a practicing internist at a busy county hospital, Expert teaches internal medicine to residents every day and keeps abreast of current developments. Expert has authored a major review on glutamine metabolism. He has also worked on gallstone dissolution and lithocholic acid at the Mayo Clinic.

In order to decide who can operate on and diagnose people, an objective method of evaluating doctors during training is needed. Expert has developed such methods for gastroenterology. He is a world expert in evaluating the competency of endoscopy. He is also knowledgeable regarding medical competency, the measurement of the ability to perform medical procedures. He recently won a grant to study this problem in a nationwide multicenter study.

As the winner of an SBIR grant to develop a voice recognition endoscopic database, Expert has been working with speech recognition systems and expert systems since 1988.
