He has worked with public telephone networks (PSTNs), public data networks (PDNs), MANs and LANs, as well as computer networks. He has also been involved in the research, development, and testing of new networking concepts and components such as ISDN, Broadband ISDN, and high speed networks. His work has covered all forms of switching such as circuit and store-and-forward and transmission systems including both analog and digital transmission. Expert's extensive work in this area has provided him with a deep understanding of the systems issues involved in telecommunications networking systems. He has also served as an expert witness in this area.

Expert has worked extensively with digital, data communications networks. He has designed data communication networks utilizing standard interfaces, protocols, and codes such as ASCII, EBCIDIC, etc., and analyzed operation and performance of equipment such as multiplexers and modems utilizing amplitude and frequency shift coding as well as QAM. He has implemented and tested physical interfaces such as RS-232, 422, 449. His work has included both synchronous and asynchronous transmission and communication. This work has been both practical and theoretical. He has presented numerous classes and seminars on these subjects. He has also served as an expert witness in this area.

One of Expert's specific areas of expertise is computer networks and computer network architectures. Expert has been heavily involved in open systems since 1972. He was one of the first workers in distributed processing utilizing distributed computer networks. He has been involved with OSI (Open System Interconnection) since it was first defined and has worked with open-system architectures. He is highly knowledgeable with regard to the OSI protocols at all levels including the presentation layer. His areas of work have included local area networks, such as Ethernet, and wide area networks, such as the Internet and SNA, as well as metropolitan area networks. A topic of special significance is the performance of such networks. This work has been both practical and theoretical. He has presented numerous classes and seminars on these subjects.

This VoIP consultant has extensive experience with telecom systems especially control systems and their interfaces with VoIP systems. This VoIP expert is knowledgeable on H.323 et.al and VoIP standards.

Expert has worked with packet networks for almost 40 years. This work has included all of the various forms of store-and-forward networks and interfaces such as X.25, frame relay, asynchronous transfer mode, etc. He has measured and analyzed the performance of such networks as well as studied their robustness. This work has been both practical and theoretical. He has presented numerous classes and seminars on these subjects. He has served as an expert witness in this area.

Expert has served as an expert witness in several intellectual property lawsuits involving patents covering data and computer networking. He has been deposed several times and has made presentations in support of Markman Hearings.

Expert is very familiar with the standards applicable to telecommunications, data networking, and computer networking. He has served on several standards development committees.

Expert coined the term "value added network" (VAN) while working in the Office of Telecommunications Policy, Office of the President. The term VAN was meant to refer to a new form of public network for which no Section 214 approval would be required from the FCC since all transmission facilities and services would be obtained from the regulated common carriers.
