PLUTONIUM AND URANIUM ANALYSES; RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPE. Expert has considerable experience in plutonium and uranium analyses where various analytical methods are used to determine the plutonium and uranium content (total and isotopic) of various materials along with the impurities present in them. He has prepared solution standards of plutonium and uranium for use in gamma spectroscopy. He worked with these elements in open front glove boxes where protective clothing was required together with various radiation detection instruments. Various analyses were also done in 'clean' room laboratories.
RADIOCHEMISTRY; REACTOR CHEMISTRY; PLUTONIUM CHEMISTRY; URANIUM CHEMISTRY. At Westinghouse-Bettis Expert analyzed fission and activation products from irradiates, nuclear reactor fuels, and cladding to determine burnup. He developed methods for the analysis of constituents of reactor materials. He participated in the nuclear startup and radiochemical analysis of 65 U.S. naval sector plants at shipyards throughout the U.S. He analyzed the primary coolant for uranium contamination in the zirconium core cladding. Also he analyzed corrosion activation products and researched possible defects in the nuclear cores. He participated in the startup of the first commercial nuclear power reactor in the U.S.
RADIATION ANALYSIS INSTRUMENTS; RADIATION CHEMISTRY; RADIOACTIVITY. Due to his years of working with radioactive materials and their analyses, Expert has become familiar with the use and calibration of various nuclear instruments; alpha beta, and gamma. He used his knowledge of radiation chemistry for the separation of specific nuclides to be quantified using these instruments.
WET CHEMICAL AND COULOMETRIC ANALYSES; WATER ANALYSIS. Expert is an expert at various separation methods used in wet chemical analyses. He has worked with coulometric methods of analysis for plutonium from dissolution, aliquoting, and analysis using coulometry. He is experienced in chemical laboratory design, having been associated with the building design of a special nuclear material (SNM) laboratory proposed for LANL. While at LANL, Expert was in charge of a water analysis laboratory which was established to perform analyses of uranium in water samples collected from various areas of the US for the national uranium resource evaluation (NURE) program.
HEALTH PHYSICS; RADIATION SHIELDING AND PROTECTION; PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. Expert has become knowledgeable in these areas in association with his work in radiochemical laboratories. These various disciplines or items were used in his analyses of radioactive materials and the types of radioactive decay associated with them.
NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY. A significant portion of Expert's career has been involved with the radio chemical analysis of fission and activation products associated with PWR-type reactors. He has set up laboratories and instrumentation to accomplish the analytical aspects of these analyses. His work required the development of specified separation procedures and counting methods for the separrated nuclides.
GEIGER-MUELLER COUNTER. Working with separrated radioactive nuclides which could be beta counted required Expert to become adept at using a Geiger-Mueller counter. Calibration of the counter together with maintaining quality control charts was a requirement for this system. He is knowledgeable of using specific nuclides for calibration purposes and troubleshooting the system.
