Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
Expert has over 37 years of experience as a chemical engineer in industry. Thirty-three of these years were spent in R & D for Amoco Chemical Co. where he developed expertise in all aspects of industrial R & D, including the design of experimental programs; the design, construction, and operation of pilot plants; the evaluation and selection of chemical process equipment; and the design and optimization of petrochemical processes. Research management assignments developed his expertise in research strategic planning and program development; personnel selection, development, and management; and technology transfer and implementation.

Expert has extensive first-hand experience in the development, design, and optimization of aromatic acids plants. Because the full range of unit operations is involved in these plants, he developed expertise in hydrocarbon oxidation reactor design, mixing, fluid flow (slurries and molten streams), heat transfer, distillation, crystallization, filtration, centrifugation, and drying. Commercialization of these aromatic acids processes also required extensive contact with process equipment vendors and general construction contractors.

Twenty-eight of Expert's 35 years in industry were involved with chemical process design and economics. He has continued to apply this expertise as a consultant in evaluating internally developed as well as competing technologies for companies within the chemical processing industry. During 1995 and 1997, he developed and taught a senior/graduate level course for chemical engineers at Purdue University. The course, which included process design and economics, required him to refresh and update his knowledge in these areas.

chemical process economics

Expert has 28 years of experience in the design, development, and optimization of chemical processes. Since block flow diagrams are required as the initial step in defining and understanding chemical processes, he is intimately familiar with their generation and use. In addition, he taught the concepts of process flow diagram development in the fall of 1995 and 1997 as part of a course on the chemical processing industry at Purdue.

Expert has extensive experience in the development, design, and optimization of aromatic acids plants. He is recognized as an expert in the area and is actively consulting with several companies. He either personally designed or supervised the design of all of the purified terephthalic acid and purified terephthalic acid units for Amoco Chemicals and its licensees for nine years. This includes all four of the currently operating, Amoco-owned units in the U.S. He also personally designed the world's first commercial chemical plant to produce trimellitic anhydride. It is the only unit of its kind in the U.S.

Expert's managerial positions broadened the scope of his knowledge to include processes for the production of light olefins (ethylene, propylene, and butadiene), styrene, maleic anhydride, and polybutenes. Optimization of these processes through simulations and models resulted in over $20 million /year operating cost savings over a recent four-year period.

chemical process modeling

Expert also has experience in the development and evaluation of new processes for chemical products not yet in commercial production. This experience includes knowledge of various techniques for evaluating the potential of different portfolios of exploratory research projects.

Expert's research management experience spans over 20 years and includes the development of research strategies and programs to be consistent with business unit strategies. He is also knowledgeable of procedures that incorporate the most current quality improvement concepts for effective research program implementation and the timely transfer of technology to other departments. Additionally, he is experienced in all aspects of scientific and engineering personnel selection, development, and evaluation, including procedures for establishing effective campus recruiting programs.

technology transfer

Most of Expert's current consulting activity involves the application of chemical engineering principles to the solution of problems related to the development, design, or optimization of chemical processes. He acquired this expertise through education and over 35 years of experience as a chemical engineer and as a director of chemical research. Having been a chemical process and technology consultant to the chemical industry for the past eight years, Expert has acquired a broader perspective on the industry. He was appointed "Shreve Visiting Industry Professor" in the School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University in August, 1995, to teach a senior/graduate level course that he developed entitled "The Chemical Processing Industry." He taught the course again in the fall of 1997 and is still actively involved with Purdue in the further development and teaching of this course.

Expert's experience as Visiting Industry Professor of Chemical Engineering added another dimension to his already extensive experience in industry-university interactions. For over 15 years he developed and conducted effective campus recruiting programs for scientists and engineers, functioning as the liaison on industry-university sponsored and joint research programs. He also served as a Charter Member of an Industrial Advisory Committee to provide industrial input toward establishing new directions in Chemical Engineering education.

industry-education interaction

During his work in Research and Development for a major chemical company, Expert was directly involved in process design and economics. This work included considerable time evaluating competitive technologies and new products and processes being developed by exploratory chemists and engineers. Over the past eight years as a consulting engineer, he has worked with three major chemical companies, evaluating the potential of technologies being offered to them for license or being developed by them for possible commercialization.

technology evaluation

For the last eight of the 35 years Expert spent at Amoco Chemical Co., he served as Director of Research in the Research and Development Department. He is proficient in conducting and/or supervising all aspects of laboratory and pilot scale experimental work for the development of new processes and optimization of existing processes. He has broad experience in the development of preliminary and final process designs for commercialization. Additionally, he is familiar with all aspects of program planning, budgeting, personnel recruiting and development, and technology transfer.
