Expert has applied his background in physics and electronics to the areas of electromagnetic interference, noise, and equipment compatibility, with particular specialization in low-frequency situations, both conducted and via fields. He has diagnosed and analyzed problems with cathode ray tube displays, analog communications, magnetic media storage, control systems, and transportation systems. He has calculated and modeled the strengths of electric and magnetic fields due to a variety of sources, including utility lines, electrical devices, and lightning strikes. He is knowledgeable of the broad range of mitigation techniques, including shielding, filtering, and grounding. He has consulted for clients in the manufacturing, electrical utility, railroad, and pipeline industries, as well as for institutions and residences.

Expert is knowledgeable of the mechanisms of electromagnetic shielding and the applications of shielding materials to reduce both the emission of radiated electromagnetic fields and the susceptibility of shielded equipment. He has carried out research into the shielding characteristics of commercial building materials, such as rigid steel conduit, against low-frequency magnetic fields. Expert can provide advice on electromagnetic interference tests, magnetostatics, magnetic field measurements, gaussmeters, and sources of electronic noise. He regularly taught undergraduate courses on electromagnetism, electromagnetic theory, and analog and digital electronics (including laboratories). Being knowledgeable of both theory and practice, he has developed numerous demonstrations of electromagnetic principles using common materials and devices. He welcomes all questions on electronics, electric circuits, electric and magnetic fields, and magnetic flux.

Experienced with characterizing and measuring the properties of magnetic materials, expert has measured magnetic susceptibility, permeability, hysteresis, and magnetization. He has worked with metallic elements, rare-earth alloys, and soft and hard magnetic materials. His doctoral thesis was a study of the preparation and measurement of magnetic susceptibility of alloys of samarium, phosphorous, and sulphur. The applications of magnetic materials that he studied in recent years include visualization, non-destructive testing, magnetic recording media, and magnetic shielding, tools, and transformers. He has served as a consulting research physicist for a major international manufacturer of diverse magnetic materials and products.

Expert is knowledgeable of the physics, engineering, and algorithms employed in gravity retarder yards (GRS, Wabco, US&S) used for freight car classification. He has conducted two studies of car speed control software and hardware at major US classification yards. He has written the definitive tutorial article and encyclopedia chapter on the fundamentals of such installations. He is knowledgeable of railroad operations, railroad technology, and the history of the industry.
