Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
About twenty years ago, Expert worked on a solid state double layer capacitor, and these exhibited very high values of specific capacitance, namely 160 F/in3 (10F/cc). Electrochemical capacitors are generally referred to as double layer or super capacitors. They are characterized by very high energy capabilities, relatively low power capabilities, and low working voltages. Recently, he performed research directed toward finding higher voltage forms of solid state electrochemical capacitors with faster response times. The electrochemical capacitor field is presently very active, with interest ranging from memory backup power sources, timers, high-voltage applications, and also as the power component for hybrid power systems for applications such as electric cars.

All comments on the above battery and electric cells also apply here. Expert's research has focused primarily upon energy conversion involving silver anode battery systems and lithium battery systems. Presently, he is especially interested in rechargeable batteries, because these offer significant advantages in the areas of cost, battery recycling, and environmental acceptability.

electrochemical-energy generation

Expert has worked with batteries for applications in which the efficiency of conversion of chemical to electrical energy is critical to the application.

Batteries are sometimes required for very high-rate discharge, such as in an electric vehicle or implantable cardiac defibrillator. Expert has interest and experience in both of these areas. High rate performance is determined by both the fundamental electrochemistry of the materials selected for the battery and the design or configuration of the battery. In designing for high rate, one runs into safety problems, because of the rapid kinetics.

Expert has worked with lithium batteries for the past twenty years. His work has included research and development on special battery systems, both solid state and liquid electrolyte, and recently includes solid polymer electrolytes and solid gel electrolytes. He is also familiar with applications of such batteries to the implantable biomedical area.
