As a retired colonel (O-6) of ordnance, Expert's military research and development activities began with lightweight armor materials (B4C, TiB2, SiC) and moved to anti-armor (kinetic energy and warhead materials--W, W alloys, and ultrafine grain W and composites). He also worked with kinetic energy penetrators using W composites (W/Ni, Fe) modeling. High-strain rate mechanical properties are integral features of these efforts.

In six years of consulting for BF Goodrich, he gained an appreciation for the properties and capabilities of carbon-carbon composites and the difficulties of making them. The application of these materials to many more systems (including internal combustion engines) depends on cutting current production costs in half. Expert is currently working on such cost-cutting processes for several clients.

Expert has devoted a large portion of his recent research and development time to ultrafine grains (0.1 to 1 micron), nanoparticles (0.01 to 0.1 micron), and grain-size solids. He maintains that related nanotechnology has a bright future in materials engineering, even though today such materials are the most difficult with which to work. His current development efforts involve ultrafine grained intermetallics, WC/Co, and refractory metals (W)--their processing, microstructure, and consolidation into useful bodies.
