Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert and his research group are heavily involved in the development of sonochemistry and the chemical effects of ultrasound. Their research has developed a broad range of applications to organic and inorganic synthesis, to materials synthesis, to both heterogeneous and homogenous catalysis, and to the production of novel biomaterials, including protein microencapsulation. Expert is the leading research scientist studying the chemical effects of ultrasound. He is actively involved in many areas of physical acoustics and the processing of liquids and solids with ultrasound. A major portion of his research deals with the effects of ultrasound on catalysis, both heterogeneous and homogeneous, and with the use of metalloporphyrins as homogeneous catalysts for oxidation processes.

His work on the chemical effects of ultrasound originates in the physical phenomena of cavitation, which produces intense local heating and high local pressures during bubble collapse. The effects of cavitation on chemical systems and surfaces is a major focus of his research. He can answer in-depth questions on cavitation erosion and liquid cavitation.

Expert's research group has developed a new "optoelectronic nose", a colorimetric sensor array, that functions as a general purpose chemical sensor for VOCs, Toxic Industrial Gases, and organics dissovled in water. In part this work derives from his prior work on eme, heme proteins, porphyrins, and metalloporphyrins, the bioinorganic chemistry of heme proteins, synthetic analogs of heme proteins, oxidative catalysis with metalloporphyrins, and the photochemistry and nonlinear optical properties of porphyrins.

Expert's primary field of specialization is inorganic, physical inorganic, materials, bioinorganic, and organometallic chemistry. His main research topics have dealt with the chemical effects of ultrasound (sonochemistry) and with metalloporphyrin chemistry. His work with metalloporphyrin catalysts has dealt heavily with selective oxidation processes, including hydroxylation of alkanes, epoxidation of alkenes, and demethylation of hetero-atom alkyls.
