Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert has worked in geology for over 30 years, including graduate school. His specialty is the geology of glaciated terrains of the Midwest, U.S. Expert has investigated the stratigraphy of Quaternary sediments and the interface between sediment and bedrock. He retains a basic knowledge of many other fields of geology. He has worked on projects with the former Bureau of Mines, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the Geological Society of Minnesota. He is skilled at explaining geological concepts in layman's terms.

Expert is not allowed to consult for pay on Minnesota geology.

Expert is familiar with many environmental geology problems in the glaciated Midwestern U.S. He has given advice on basement seepage, natural water level of lakes, cause of a damaging landslide, cause of house foundation subsidence, spontaneous hole in lawn, etc. He was an active member of the panel that wrote "Criteria and Guidelines for Assessing Geologic Sensitivity of Ground Water Resources in Minnesota." He has twice taught an introductory course, "Our Geologic Environment" at Mankato State University. He has helped design and run workshops for non-geologists to use county geologic atlases to address environmental problems.

Expert has authored and co-authored numerous geologic maps, mainly of surficial or glacial geology. He has carried out fieldwork, collected samples, operated a truck-mounted soil auger, and collected deeper samples from Rotasonic drilling. He has described samples under a low-power microscope, and used texture and the lithology of coarse sand to work out glacial stratigraphy. Expert uses glacial and erosional geomorphology to guide the placement of lines on his maps. He also uses parent material in soil surveys to add detail to surficial maps. He understands how scale and density of data control the precision of mapping.
