Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
As a consultant, Expert has used his broad-based scientific background to work with a variety of clients. These clients have required expertise in such widely divergent subjects as the production of cellulosic ethanol (requiring a knowledge of basic thermodynamics, enzyme biochemistry, and understanding of fermentation and distillation) and detection of biowarfare weapons (requiring a knowledge of sensor technology and microbiology).

Expert's academic research career was spent in the general area of molecular biochemistry. A large portion of this research was spent more specifically in the area of structural biochemistry. He has had an extensive research career in biochemical research and has focused on research in the areas of structural biology (emphasis on nuclear magnetic resonance [NMR] spectroscopy), immunochemistry, protein chemistry, and neuropharmacology. Expert is the senior author of over 120 original research publications in this area.

Expert is familiar with a wide range of bioinstrumentation, including PCR thermal cyclers, optical and fluorescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, electroporation, and most other instrumentation found commonly in molecular biology laboratories. He has extensive experience with a wide variety of biomedical instruments and mainframe and desktop computing.

Expert has taught biophysical chemistry at the graduate and undergraduate levels and is a co-editor and author (along with M.D. Deutscher) for a popular recent textbook on biophysical chemistry entitled "Introduction to Biophysical Methods in Protein and Nucleic Acid Research", [Academic Press, 1995]. Many of Expert's research papers concern areas in biophysical chemistry.

Expert's research career has encompassed many areas of protein biochemistry as well, including the structural chemistry, purification, analysis, and sequencing of proteins. He has taught protein biochemistry at the graduate level.

Expert's laboratory was one of the first to report the production, and to examine the properties, of anti-drug monoclonal antibodies. His laboratory also used these antibodies for the later production, and to examine the properties of, polyclonal anti-idiotypic antibodies that mimic the binding of the original drugs at their cellular receptors. Their immunochemical properties were investigated using physical, biochemical and molecular biological techniques. Expert is senior author on many original research publications describing and reviewing these findings.

Expert has extensive teaching experience in biochemistry at the technician, undergraduate, graduate and medical/dental undergraduate student levels. He is able to effectively bring home the general concepts of biochemistry at any of these levels.

Expert's research in recent years kept focus on the biochemistry of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). In particular, his laboratory has been concerned with the cellular biological aspects of the receptors for narcotic analgesics. The laboratory reports stemming from this work concerned the signal transduction pathways activated by receptor activation.

Expert's company has examined the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatibility of medical devices for a major manufacturer. Expert arranged the delivery of a rental MRI to the manufacturer's site, designed and wrote the testing protocol, performed the testing, and analyzed the results. With his generalized knowledge of instruments and test procedures, he is able to aid in product development for a wide variety of devices.

Expert has been a member and taught in a graduate program in neuroscience for 20 years. His research in this area has concentrated on neuropharmacology and molecular biology of peptides and narcotic analgesic drugs.

Expert's recent research has been on the neuropharmacology of narcotic analgesic drugs. He has taught aspects of neuropharmacology, particularly neuropeptides, at the graduate student level. He is currently under contract to write an extensive review of pharmacogenomics/pharmacogenetics for a major publisher of drug research reports.

As a consultant in the broad area of biotechnology, Expert has furnished clients with: (1) written technology assessments of new advances (2) written articles on the scientific basis of future developments (3) taken part in research focused on developing methods

Expert has used electroporation of bacterial cells as a research tool. He has also developed applications of electroporation to transforming mammalian cells.

As a consultant, for 7 years, Expert has been giving a course on cleanroom microbiology and the problem of minimizing the entry of environmental microbials into the working environment. He has also been a scientific advisor for companies manufacturing products for removal of microbials from the home and industrial environments.

As an academic researcher, Expert's group was one of the first to develop monoclonal antibodies to opiate drugs and to opiate peptides. They developed new techniques to monitor hybridomas expressing the desired monoclonal antibodies.

Expert has taken part in seminars, and consulted for companies in the field of microbials that can be used to remove industrial wastes such as oils and greases from factories and homes.

Expert spent a large part of his academic research career studying the structures of macromolecules using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy as a tool. He is co-editor of a textbook on macromolecular physical chemistry.

Besides using microbiology tools in his academic research, Expert headed a teaching committee charged with instructing medical students on basic microbiology. As a consultant he has lectured on microbiology in cleanrooms for 7 years.

Expert's PhD is in the field of chemical physics (then a branch of physical chemistry). He has given courses in physical chemistry, at the post-graduate level.

As part of his research on macromolecular physical chemistry, Expert also worked with the structures of many polymers.

Expert has published several papers on protein biochemistry, in particular focused on the protein biochemistry of narcotic receptors.

Expert did pioneering nuclear magnetic resonance research on bulk liquid water, and the interactions of water with surfaces. A large number of publications in his early research career are on this subject.
