Summary of Expertise:

Expert earned his Ph.D. by developing a finite element method for the analysis of anisotropic laminated materials. He then used this experience to meet the spacecraft demands for minimum weight and thermal stability by applying advanced composite materials to solar array substrate designs as well as the large parabolic antenna assemblies used in geosynchronous communication satellites. In all, he directed the mechanical design of eighteen commercial communication satellites with extensive use of advanced composite materials.

The need for minimum weight in commercial satellite systems drove Expert to incorporate ultra-lightweight beryllium components in the early designs and because of the success, to continue using this concept for many years with reliable results. The solar array booms required high stiffness to support the large deployed arrays. As several papers by Expert illustrate, beryllium reliably achieved this goal. As AlBeMet became commercially available, Expert was an active proponent in incorporating this material into other spacecraft components.

In working with a major satellite developer, Expert developed a Charter Customer Program to better understand customer needs and expectations for a proposed new broadband satellite system. By establishing relationships with corporations who were potential users of this new system, and assuring noncompetitive and open sharing of information, the concept development time was dramatically reduced. This approach is highly recommended for new programs.

Expert's spacecraft experience began in structural design and analysis. His interests and leadership in this area continued through the years even as his role expanded into the broader field of Mechanical Systems. His structural design activity included extensive weight reduction using dynamic isolation techniques and advanced materials. His early design efforts produced a satellite structure that was 33% lighter than conventional designs. This approach became the industry standard in today's commercial satellite market.

1995 to 2001

Motorola

Advanced Systems Division

Senior Manager, Strategic Marketing

Expert developed a Charter Customer Program to better understand customer needs and expectations for a proposed broadband satellite system. By assuring noncompetitive and open sharing of information, the concept development time was greatly reduced. Other duties included business analysis for proposed services to be offered over wireless systems.

1990 to 1995

LaCar Aerospace Systems, Inc.

Consultant

Expert provided consulting services in spacecraft mechanical systems and advanced materials to aerospace companies in the U.S., France, and Italy.

1985 to 1990

Princeton University

Dept. of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering

Visiting Lecturer

Expert developed and taught engineering design courses and recieved high ratings from the Accredation Board for Engineering and Technology for this effort. He had to leave this position when he decided to begin his consulting service in Europe.

1973 to 1990

RCA / GE

AstroSpace Division

Manager, Mechanical Systems

Expert began in structural analysis and quickly became the manager of that group, before becoming the manager of mechanical systems and leading the mechanical architecture of eighteen commercial communication satellites.

Career Accomplishments:
Associations/Societies

Expert served as Chairman of the AIAA Committee on Spacecraft Design Standards which generated the Mass Properties Design Standard available worldwide. The Committee consisted of design experts from major aerospace corporations throughout the U.S.

Awards/Recognition

Expert received the Outstanding Engineer Award from RCA AstroSpace. This award was granted for design efforts in producing a satellite structure that was 33% lighter than conventional designs. This approach became the industry standard in today's commercial satellite market.
