Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert has spent 35 years with DuPont in research on several polymers. Most of his efforts were focused on nylons as engineering thermoplastics. His experience has encompassed monomer synthesis, polymerization, processing, new product development, and characterization. He has dealt with problems in manufacturing, processing, and composition variability. He has worked with sales to address customer problems. He has been asked to lecture and discuss difficulties at major customers because of a track record of competent, honest assessment ranging from pinpointing the problem to saying I don't know but, by DuPont making alternatives and your evaluating them, we can get answers. Regarded as a nylon expert, he was often called upon for help by DuPont colleagues. His extensive background was used in patent prosecution and litigation. Since retirement in 1982 he has served as a consultant on nylon plastics to companies, both large and small, and as an expert witness in patent and liability litigation. He has been involved in polymer education both as an adjunct professor at Drexel University and as coordinator of an ACS funded project to bring the story of polymers into the precollege grades. As a result of a request by SPE, DuPont selected Expert to edit and contribute to the first ever book on nylon plastics. Published in 1973 it became known as the "nylon bible". Its inclusion of nylon fundamentals made it useful to the fiber as well as the plastics industry. Hanser approached him for a sequel in 1990, and the nylon plastics handbook was published in 1995. He has authored several other publications and holds several patents.

Expert carried out an extensive study of the effect of humidity on the glass transition temperature of nylons His data explained the differences between ambient toughness and the low temperature brittleness of moist nylons. He also did extensive studies on the effect of moisture and shear on the melt behavior of nylons varying in type and molecular mass.

He made use of a constant rate capillary rheometer in the determination of the melt behavior of nylon. Measurement of solution viscosity on both the charge and the extrudate permitted definition of not only the moisture content and hold-up time to assure retention of molecular mass but also emphasized the need for single point determination per charge.

Expert has published a simple lab technique for the hydrolytic polymerization of caprolactam, and he holds patents on the anionic polymerization of caprolactam. He has reviewed the classic work on the polymerization of caprolactam with functional additives and has provided added insights to this work.

His work on the toughening of nylon has provided insight into the role of compatibilizing agents.

compatibilizing agent

Expert has been involved in R&D on acetal and nylon thermoplastics. Evaluation relative to competitive polymers and independent studies have given him an understanding of the role of engineering thermoplastics.

He is familiar with nylon-12 as a result of his work at DuPont on nylons and independent work associated in part with his editing two books on nylon plastics.

Expert is familiar with nylon-6 because of his own work on the polymerization of caprolactam and because of extensive studies on the properties of nylon-6 and nylon-66.

Having spent most of years in DuPont working on all aspects of nylon-66, he is intimately familiar with this nylon.

Expert's extensive studies on nylons and his editing of two books on nylon plastics have made him very familiar with the characterization of nylons and the problems therein.

polyamide evaluation

Expert's entire career with DuPont was with polymers. His ability to contribute in this area demanded a knowledge of polymer chemistry. One manifestation of this is his work on the melt behavior of nylons. Another is his work on the glass transition temperature as a function of relative humidity.

"Zytel" is DuPont's trade name for its collection of nylon-based products. Work on "Zytels" occupied most of Expert's 35 years in DuPont R&D.
