Expert received his Ph.D. in condensed-matter physics. He used quantum mechanics and Surface Green Function techniques to calculate electronic states and electronic bands at metallic superlattices, discovering, for example, the existence--under determined conditions-of the so-called Fermi beaches with high density of levels just at the Fermi level. ("Fermi beaches" is a term that he proposed to describe a phenomenon that arises in multilayers under certain conditions). He has also experience in other solid state areas, such as synthesizing and measuring high temperature superconductors.

Expert has been professor of computer-aided design (CAD) for more than five years. He has implemented CAD systems for companies and institutions. For example, he has developed and managed the "ITP Design Room" for two years, training engineers in the use of CAD techniques oriented to Rolls Royce standards for turbomachinery and design of aircraft engines. He also has expertise in using other computer methods and software for engineering, such as finite element software. He has used these for modal analysis, mechanical simulation, and mechanical testing and design. For example, he modeled the vibration modes for a mass-flowmeter and a dynamometric wheel. Minimum constrain design and safety in machines (ergonomy) have also been included in his work.

Expert has broad expertise in acoustics, including environmental and architectural acoustics, and the uses of acoustics for measurement and testing. He has taught a course in "acoustical engineering" at a university and has developed demonstrative prototypes and practices. He has designed and optimized isolating walls, elements, and entire buildings, such as multicinemas. This task was done using both techniques for acoustical measurement and computing and simulation. Also, he has developed several new and useful devices based on properties of sound. Examples include a distance-tachometer for measuring the velocity of an engine at distance and a device for measuring the volume of a cavity.

Expert has designed and installed air conditioning and refrigerating facilities for all kind of buildings, particularly for hotels, convention halls, and manufacturing facilities. He has solved particularly difficult challenges: for instance, large sizes, humidity control, or regulation of industrial processes with high heat generation. He has also invented a system, proven to be very efficient, to provide sterile, conditioned air. As a further example, he has designed a system for cleaning air and evacuate pollutants from a polyurethane foam production line in Castille (Spain). Chemicals are thus removed from work places at a very low cost, with very high reliability and complete safety.

Expert, a mechanical engineer, has taught a course in mechanical design for three years in a doctorate program. He has also given courses on mechanism design in the General Motors educational program and for the European Community. He has designed and built many mechanisms that are now working in industry for automated assembly and specific tasks. The use of minimum constraints principles has led him to make low-cost and very reliable designs. Electronic regulation, sensors, and monitoring of the machine are eventually included to enhance the characteristics of these machines. He has given lectures in safety and ergonomics and has implemented safety and quality programs for vehicle component manufacturers. He has broadly used computer-aided design and engineering programs to develop precision mechanisms and useful machines. He has managed the ITP Design School program for the Rolls Royce ITP company.

Expert has a broad expertise in data acquisition and automated data acquisition, processing, and regulation. Being both an engineer and a physicist, he has dealt with precision, accuracy, and repeatability problems, with implementation and design of automated data acquisition systems, and has used them as worktools. In particular, he has dealt with digital signal processing (DSP) and simultaneously acquired channels (by using sample holders) for phase and time delay measurements. He has designed and built devices for measuring and testing, such as a device for measuring pollutant concentrations in exhaust gases in vehicles, and a dynamometric wheel.

Expert has designed integral energy management systems for buildings, including an isolating and climate-control system. In particular he has recently designed an eco-efficient multipurpose cultural building that is now under construction in Madrid. The building includes solar energy, natural gas generation, passive accumulation, and computerized management of the system.

Expert, an engineer and physicist, has worked and researched during more than 10 years in the areas of cooling, refrigerating systems, and fresh produce storage. In particular, he has invented a refrigerating system useful for trucks, sea-containers, and fixed chambers, which maintains fresh produce properties for longer periods than conventional systems. He also has expertise in all kind of cooling devices like Peltier devices or evaporative towers. He also has experience with cryogenics, the use of liquid nitrogen, and cryomechanics. In particular, he worked on superconducting magnets at liquid helium temperature at CERN (Switzerland), and with high temperature superconductors at liquid nitrogen temperature at Uc3m University. Therefore he has familiarity with refrigerant piping and chamber design, road transport, and long term storage.

Expert has worked on both simulation and finite element computing of mechanical stress in components and on stress measurement by using extensiometric gauges. He has simulated stresses for different mechanisms and devices such as railway wheels, mass-flow meters, and tubes. He has also used gauges and stress measurements for a system detecting resonance coincidence in vibration and rotation for automotive wheels, or in a dynamometric wheel able to measure transversal forces in a wheel.

Expert is an expert on air quality, and humidity control and its regulation. He has designed and developed systems for preservation of artworks at regulated humidity. He has also worked on humidity regulation under extreme conditions such as high or low temperatures or "rare" air with altered composition. He has also invented a system for sterilizing and climate-controlling air, which is useful for hospitals and operating theaters. This system absolutely eliminates viruses, bacteria, fungi, and spores.

Expert has much experience in measurement and testing. Particularly, he has developed instruments and systems for nondestructive and remote testing and measurement. Examples include a remote acoustic tachometer, a frequency vibration-oscillation detector, a mass-flowmeter, a device for measuring pollutant concentrations at distance, and a dynamometric wheel.

Expert has worked on both low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. For example, he contributed to the design of niobium superconducting magnets at CERN, and has synthesized and used YBaCuO superconductors for building non-contact superconductor-magnet bearings. He has also worked on theoretical electronic properties of superconductors.

Selected Consulting Examples:
  • Expert optimized the wall design for multicinemas: The client, building and construction company, had a design for a multicinema center. The walls were too thick and expensive. Expert modeled and computed the acoustical dynamics, airborne transmissions and isolations in the center and optimized the wall design, changing materials, and construction methods, and reduced costs by 60-70% bringing a savings of about 1 million Euros. This has been repeated twice for this company.
  • He decreased air pollution in a work area: A chemical company had a problem with air pollution in the work place. It caused both environmental and health problems.The source of the gases and the characteristics of the building made it a very complex problem of air flow dynamics. Some other consultants had proposed very expensive systems with a high number of fans and no certainty of success. However, he was able to design a "one fan" model systemizing air flows and installing an inexpensive system of polyethylene of curtains. Measurements made by an independent lab confirmed the reduction of pollution levels below the allowed limits and confirmed the overall performance of the system. The total cost was 20-25% of those proposed by other consultants.
  • Expert invented and developed a system for measurements of volume in cavities: A company manufacturing glass instruments for laboratories needed a cheap, fast, and reliable system for calibrating volumes. He analyzed the problem, selected the useful physical properties, and proposed a method based on Helmholtz resonance to measure volumes. Furthermore, he performed applied research to develop the system and build a prototype.
  • He automated a production line: A company with a line for manufacturing polyurethane cylinders needed an automated system for tracking a polyethylene film with a 3D continous variation and regulation. He designed and built an automated system reducing the need from 12 people to one person for the proccess (just to look and supervise), increasing speed by 50% and standardizing the quality of the proccess.
  • Other examples of his work include: he developed a dynamometric universal wheel for the measurement of forces acting on a rolling wheel, based on the use of extensiometric gauges; he designed ovens for continuous production of bread with an increase of 180% of production speed; he designed and built a new refrigeration system for fresh produce transport increasing by 200% the time of storage available; and he designed and tested a device for providing sterile and climate-controlled air to a room.
