He is very knowledgeable in the chain transfer chemistry of both free radical and anionic polymerization of vinyl monomers. He was an early pioneer of the development of chain transfer agents that operate by the addition-fragmentation mechanism.

Expert notes that monomers must undergo and initiation step before polymerization can take place. He has performed detailed studies to determine the mechanism of polymerization of vinyl monomers. He has published several scientific papers on this subject. He is a well-known expert on free radical polymerization as well as on living or controlled radical polymerization. He was one of the early pioneers in developing an understanding of living radical polymerization and holds several patents on this area of technology.

Expert holds a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry and has applied this knowledge to polymers. Expert is considered to be a world-class expert in the field of polymer stabilization and degradation. His approach to polymer degradation research has not been Edisonian (running hundreds of experiments), but rather he first tears degraded polymers apart in order to fully understand degradation mechanisms. Once the mechanism of degradation is determined, he conducts focused experiments to demonstrate problem resolution. He holds several patents and many publications in this field.

Expert has an in-depth understanding of the chemistry of styrene and of all the trace impurities it contains. He also is an expert in purification of styrene and also on stabilizing it against polymerization.


Expert is an expert on ABS plastics, including failure mechanisms, degradation, stabilization, and discoloration.

Expert was an early pioneer of biodegradable polystyrene research. He developed the technology to insert hydrolyzable ester linkages into the polystyrene backbone allowing it to biodegrade. His work with the development of environmentally degradable polystyrene foam food packaging has been widely published.

Expert developed state-of-the-art polymer analysis techniques that allowed him to characterize off-grade (discoloration and low strength) polycarbonate resins. His work led to a fundamental understanding of the structure/property relationships in polycarbonate plastics. He has published his pioneering work on the application of GPC-UV analysis of polycarbonate.

Expert notes that most vinyl monomers are highly reactive and must be stabilized with a polymerization inhibitor for safe distillation, handling, and storage. He has developed new inhibitors for acrylate, methacrylate, styrenic monomers, and monomer mixtures. Expert also notes that some inhibitors must be removed before the monomer is used to make plastics; he has developed inhibitors that allow the manufacture of high quality plastics without removal.
