His major focus at the University has been in grape production. He has been instrumental in helping the the wine industry of Washington become recognized world-wide, having worked with the industry since it was just beginning. He has developed systems to help the Washington grape industry survive particularly cold temperatures. He also has expertise in siting and establishing vineyards. He was recently in Armenia as a consultant for the USDA helping the Armenian grape industry recover from a devestatingly cold winter. He is currently teaching courses in canopy management, cold management and vineyard establishment.


Although he has worked with all tree fruit, he is particularly skilled in the production of sweet cherries. Washington is the leading state for cherry production and he has just received the highest award from that industry for his educational programs. He is experienced in all aspects of cherry production incuding canopy management, water management and pest management. He also has his own orchard where he raises sweet cherries for the world market.
