He worked for Stelco for 36 years and has metallurgy and quality control experience in plate, hot-rolled sheets, rod and bar, galvanized sheet, prepainted sheet, tinplate,
product/service metallurgy, and in ISO quality systems management. He also has a detailed understanding of ASTM and ISO sheet steel product and testing specifications,
having authored a number of them.
He has been a member of ASTM since 1985 and remains active in committees A01, A05 and B02. was Chairman of Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Steels from 2004
through 2009. Currently Chairman of Subcommittee A05.07 on Testing. Was presented with the Award of Merit by Committee A05 in 1998.
One of the co-authors of coated steel sheet specifications A 653/A 653M and A 924/A 924M, first issued in 1994. A 653 governs galvanized steel sheet.
Co-authored (1996) the revision of ASTM specification A 754/A 754M, a test method for coating weight of metallic-coated sheet using x-ray fluorescence. This standard governs
the on-line measurement of metallic coatings on steel sheet.
Authored (2003) ASTM specification A 1030/A 1030M, test method for measuring the flatness of steel sheet products. Authored specification A1079, steel sheet, complex phase
(CP), dual phase (DP), TRIP, zinc coated by hot-dip process, A1088 steel sheet, cold rolled, complex phase (CP), dual phase (DP), TRIP; A1094/A1094M, continuous hot-dip
galvanized steel bars for concrete reinforcement.
He worked for 15 years as the supervising metallurgist of the cold rolled and coated division of Stelco, and is knowledgeable in the processing, quality assurance, and customer
service of cold rolled sheet products.
Since 2003 he has been teaching the Steels in Service continuing education course at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. This course provides practical knowledge
about the use of steel in society, concentrating on the reasons for and prevention of corrosion, and includes the concept of galvanic protection.
He has worked in the galvanized steel sheet field since 1968, where he started as the mill metallurgist for the galvanizing department at Stelco. Involved with testing, inspection,
problem analysis and resolution, customer service, quality assurance, product development, and the design of new coating facilities. Progressed over this time to become the
manager of metallurgy and quality assurance for the cold roll and coated department at the time of his retirement.
He is the Director of the GalvInfo Center, a program of the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO). The GalvInfo Center is a resource for technical information
on the use and performance of metallic-coated steel sheet, and is sponsored by galvanized sheet producers and suppliers.
He is the Canadian (Standards Council of Canada) representative on ISO/TC17/SC12 Committee on flat rolled steel sheet. Since 2001 he has attended all technical meetings of
this committee and is active in the review and updating of the sheet specifications under the committee's jurisdiction. He works closely with ANSI in the USA, who hold the
Secretariat of SC12.
In addition to galvanized sheet, he has detailed process and product knowledge of the manufacturing, quality assurance, product development, and customer processing of hot
rolled and cold rolled sheets.
He has an extensive understanding of the metallurgy of annealing steel, both continuous and batch (box) annealing. This includes the time and temperatures required,
necessary equipment, and the upstream and downstream processing necessary to make a quality product.
Has a good understanding of the corrosion mechanisms involved with steel and the preventive methods that can be employed.
