The optimization of the strain and media is accomplished by genetic and media experimentation using fundamental principles (mass balances and thermodynamic calculations on metabolic pathways or the overall fermentation) and search strategies (genetic algorithms, quadratic approximation, etc).

The design and scale up of fermenters (agitated, bubble column, draft tube, and solid state) depends upon many factors of the fermentation including aeration, heat transfer, feed requirements, pH control, temperature control, sterility requirements, and others. He has significant experience in designing pilot scale equipment and using this equipment for fermentation scale up.

Contamination of sterile fermentations is a significant problem and proper sterile engineering is needed to reduce or eliminate the problem. When contamination occurs in a fermentation, the search for the cause often requires careful investigation.

The economic analysis of the fermentation is important to reduce the cost of production. This economic analysis includes the productivity, the yield on the main substrate component, the cost of the media, utilities, labor and other costs.

He has worked on many different fermentations including enzymes (alpha amylase, phytase, glucose oxidase, glucose isomerase, catalase, proteases, rennet, lipases, and others), yeast products, citric acid, lactic acid, lysine, threonine, omega three fatty acids, astaxanthan, gluconic acid, glutamic acid, and others.

Expert has process development and industrial experience in the separation, purification and product formation of fermentation and biochemical products.

The separation processes used are filtration, ultrafiltration, centrifugation, extraction, chromatography, adsorption, ion exchange, precipitation, granulation, drying, spray drying, and others. He has much experience in process develop using these processes including the pilot testing of these unit operations and the evaluation of data from these tests.

Material and energy balances as well as dynamic models are used to understand and predict various aspects of unit operations or whole processes. These calculations are also used to evaluate the processes economically and to optimize the processes.
