During his time as a consultant he has worked on projects that have involved fouling of glass surfaces, development of program for modifying the surface energy of materials to make an array of materials with a gradient of surface energetics, adhesion/release problems to metal surfaces, surfactant selection for reaction optimization, and surface modifications of polymeric materials. As VP of R&D and CTO for Nextec Applications Inc he worked on control fiber encapsulation with silicone and fluorochemistries to control water penetration and absorption. As the Director of RD&E for the chemical products division of Waters Inc. he drove and participated in research which related to interactions of liquids, biofluids and mixtures with surfaces and separation of materials which resulted in co-inventorship on U.S. 7 patents and an R&D 100 award. At Kimberly Clark he worked on surface properties of materials resulting in inventorship in 10 U.S. patents relating to biofluid movement, absorption, surface modification, control of surface energy. During his tenure at Kimberly-Clark he prepared numerous reports and delivered many presentations on the measurement of contact angles and surface energy. At Albany International Research Company he worked on surface phenomena as related to materials with special emphasis on the paper making process resulting in on U.S. Patent for soil removal as a function of surface energetics. During this tenure he developed an instrument for measuring the dynamic contact angle of oil under water on a fiber surface and was awarded a trade secret award.

Expert has spent his career working with and teaching about polymeric materials. As VP of R&D and CTO at Nextec Applications Inc. he worked with synthetic and natural textile fibers and modifications of these fibers using silicone, fluoropolymers and polyurethanes. During his tenure as Director of RD&E of chemical products at Waters Inc. he worked on inorganic materials like silica and alumina as well as revolutionary separations media based on block copolymers. During his tenure at Kimberly-Clark he worked on nonwoven materials including polyolefins, rayon, and polyester, this work centered on the properties, modification and testing of these materials. During this same time period he taught a polymer chemistry course at University of Wisconsin Green Bay. He also worked at the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center (AMMRC) examining the synthesis and characterization of block copolymeric materials for reduced hysteretic heat build up. These studies focused mainly on polyurethanes and polycarbonates.
