Expert has been a leader in the field of structured cabling systems with his technical contributions in standards, commercial/home product specifications, and technical books. He was an important contributor to TIA-568, which was the first industry standard for these structured cabling systems. This involved defining both the architecture and performance requirements for the cabling system to ensure both application support and interoperability of different vendors' equipment. Working with his Bell Labs colleagues, he led AT&T's involvement in the TIA standards committee and was one of the driving forces for the development of this important standard. For the last 15 years, the vast majority of cabling that has been installed in commercial buildings confirms to this standard and its revisions.

Expert provided leadership for the development of the Category 5, 5E and 6 cabling standards which are universally used by modern LANs. He was also responsible for the internal AT&T product requirements and displayed considerable leadership in bringing leading-edge products to market at essentially the same time as the standards were finalized. Expert was the primary driver in defining the AT&T product features and functions to insure optimum technical tradeoffs among the different system components (e.g. cable and connectors) to meet performance objectives, manufacturing costs, product quality and product cost targets within the SYSTIMAX product family, and particularly the Category 6 GigaSPEED? system. He has authored numerous technical papers on cabling and related issues. He has also written two books on cabling and networks as well.

Expert has been involved in the field of digital switching, particularly as it relates to PBX's, for most of his career. He was the architect and lead engineer for the design of the AT&T's first digital PBX. This system incorporates both a duplicated TDM bus with distributed circuit switching and a demand-access (i.e., packet) bus. He holds the three key patents on this switching technology. This system was described in an article in the AT&T Technical Journal which was reprinted in the IEEE Press Book “Digital Private Branch Exchanges.” This system, now known as the Definity PBX, is still the flagship product for Avaya and has generated over $20B of revenue. He contributed to several versions of this product family and has continued with consulting work in several other areas of digital switching.

Expert first became involved with optical systems while doing his master's thesis (Speckle Reduction in Coherent Optical Imaging) at the University of Delaware. He has worked on numerous fiber cabling systems, multiplexers, etc. His final two years at Bell Labs were in the Optical Networking Group working on all-optical networks using the LambdaRouter optical switch. This work was documented in the paper, which Expert co-authored for the SubOptic International Convention in Kyoto, Japan. Since 2001, he has worked on a number of fiber-optic LANs and consulted with optical switch start-ups.

He is an expert on, and major proponent of, IEEE 1394 networks (also known as FireWire.) He has been involved with the 1394 Trade Association and currently chairs the Residential Backbone Working Group. He has been involved in specifying and developing interfaces to new media including high-speed UTP, baseband coaxial cable, and singlemode fiber. Expert has also been heavily involved with IEEE 1394 standards committees. He served as secretary of the IEEE 1394c committee and currently chairs the IEEE 1394 committee. He served as editor for IEEE-1394-2008 which update and revised the entire suite of 1394 standards. Expert has also been an advocate of IEEE 1394 for audio/video networks, especially home networks. His book contains an extensive discussion of IEEE 1394 technology. He has consulted on IEEE 1394 issues with numerous clients.

He has worked extensively in issues related to the physical layer. He is frequently involved in areas where the cabling media interacts with the physical layer of the LAN. As a member of the TIA TR-42.7 committee, he participated in the development of cabling standards to support 10 Gb/s Ethernet, specifically TSB-155 (Guidelines for the Assessment and Mitigation of Installed Category 6 Cabling to Support 10GBASE-T) and Category 6A UTP cabling (TIA 568B.2-10, Transmission Performance Specifications For 4-Pair 100 Ohm Augmented Category 6 Cabling). Expert has consulted with numerous clients on physical layer issues, including defining interfaces for new types of media, troubleshooting transmission problems, and designing and building prototypes of new LAN interfaces. He has been active in physical layer standards issues for both FireWire (IEEE 1394) and Ethernet (IEEE 802.3).

Expert is a recognized expert and leading advocate of the use of unshielded twisted pair cabling. He has been involved in the field and has contributed to all the major TIA cabling standards, including the following (and numerous amendments): TIA-568 (Commercial Building Telecommunication Cabling Standard); TIA-570 (Residential Telecommunications Cabling Standard); TIA-606 (Administration Standard for Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure).

While at Bell Labs, he also responsibility for development of structured cabling products, including the industry-leading SYSTIMAX Structured Cabling System which featured the first Category 5 and Category 6 UTP cabling systems. He continues to be active in the TIA TR-42 committee and has recently participated in the standardization of UTP cabling systems to support 10 Gb/s Ethernet, including TSB-155 (Guidelines for the Assessment and Mitigation of Installed Category 6 Cabling to Support 10GBASE-T) and the Augmented Category 6 UTP specification (TIA 568B.2-10, Transmission Performance Specifications For 4-Pair 100 Ohm Augmented Category 6 Cabling). Expert is the co-author of a book, which is currently in its third edition, that covers the theory, standards, component requirements, and system considerations for modern structured cabling systems. It has been very influential in the industry and has been widely used in both academic and industrial training programs. The three editions of this book have sold more than 27,000 copies.

Expert has been active in a number of LAN areas, often in relation to physical layer, link layer, or transmission issues. Expert is also actively involved with new LAN developments. He was a member of the IEEE 802.3an committee which developed the 10GBASE-T specification. He is also very active in the IEEE 1394 community and has chaired the IEEE 1394 committee since 2007.

Expert has done a lot of work with residential networks, including voice, data, entertainment (video and audio) and home automation. He is the author of Residential Networks (ISBN 1-4018-6267-5) and chaired the Residential Backbone Working Group of the 1394 Trade Association.

He has consulted with numerous clients on LAN issues, including defining interfaces for new types of media, troubleshooting transmission problems, designing and building prototypes of new LAN interfaces, designing residential networks, and designing structured cabling systems for homes and commercial buildings.

He has also served as an expert witness in a number of patent suits involving Ethernet and Power over Ethernet.
