Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Through many years of studying and working on numerous different sour/acid gas treatment sections, he was able to resolve and manage both large and small absorbers, ( normally called contactors ), bringing the cleansing ratios down 0.0 on both grains p/g and 0.0 on h2s/co2 content, maintaining these levels, as normal operations parameters, when the process plant shut down or tripped through process malfunctions, he was able through implementation and numerous years of experience, both off shore and on remote located process plants, to implement a method of operation that reduced this delay, reducing the process lost down time to near zero. Coupled with a method of extracting all of the harmful H2S and Co2 from the contactor/absorber, removing these contaminates from the system through the amine regenerator, to the extent that "little" or zero foaming was experienced over a period of (1) one year. Consequently through-out these periods very little amine was added to the system as make up, thereby saving the companies and clients numerous $1000.00 of dollars in purchasing fresh supplies of anti-foam and amine concentrate. This also obviously improved the acid gas flows to the sulfur processing plant, increasing the plants output, resulting in increased gas processes production. Through these efforts he was able to bring production flows through the plant to + plus 100% every day, maintaining this rates year on year.

Through-out these periods, whilst at Souedie, as Consultant/Advisor he was responsible for the process plants and implementation of any changes. He discussed with management and the gas plant Director, any upgrades, plus process changes, through these agreements implemented the plant changes and modifications. He wrote up the procedures for the annul shut-down and the re-start procedures for and throughout the annual maintenance shut down, included in this criteria were revamping of the cooling water circulation system, which through mistreatment was seriously restricting circulation flows through process cooling units, complicating the maintenance scheduling, signing for, and was responsible for all of the plant processes up grades.

Whilst he was working for and with ShellMex&BP:

During earlier years he was the company's Air Ministry Aviation Inspector, legalized by the government to except aviation product into the companies tank-age and release Aviation AVTUR to the military air field bases through-out the UK. K1 is always classified as AVTUR, commonly known as "aviation fuel". K2 is normally paraffin. K3 is normally heating oil. The paraffin range can be used, if required to flush through the amine process plant during shut-downs. K1 as the purest section of the kerosene range, makes it an obvious choice. As the government inspector he alone could set up the loading of products to trucks, he organized the discharge of the rail car on delivery, making him responsible for non contamination, analyzing the samples to ensure correct dosing.

aviation fuel

He was instrumental in setting the percentage rates for these flows, gases from these processes, from the crude distillation columns and or associated pipeline systems. Sour and acidic gas can be routed to pass through the amine treating section. During normal operations that required process changes, he was responsible in implementing these changes, ensuring that they were within the required specifications that enhance process production. Benefiting the client.

batch petroleum refining

He was instrumental in blowing/purging the condenser free of catalyst, removing a large quantity of catalyst from the sulphur condenser. The performance of the plant was not impaired. Production was maintained until the annual shut down during the next year. During that shut down the entire catalyst beds were cleared, new stainless meshing was fitted, of which he ensured that the base and sealing method ensured no cracks. He was then instrumental in the reloading of the catalyst to the beds. At the restart of the process systems he detailed and organized the temperature layering of the catalyst beds, known as sulfinating, if carried out incorrectly the beds can "fire" out of control, making them extremely difficult to quench out. This system is solely reliant on the "fire" ignition chamber, which re-fractionated to very specific applied details, combined with the building and construction of the internal "matrix" fire break wall. On completion of the catalyst layering, process production can being, extreme care must be taken when the produced sulfur begins to run down, that the condenser temperatures are sufficiently high enough, failure to maintain high enough temperature will result in condenser tubes plugging. He instigated a temperature profile that in 8 years of operation, no condenser tubes ever became plugged, production remained at maximum level through-out that time. Many of the plants and processes were up-graded through his instigation; he diagnosed the problems and implemented more efficient methods of process operations. Being totally responsible for the changes.
Crude distillation, is the normal method of all refineries in their initial process of refining. Crude oil is heated in the distiller, producing gases at certain levels, the top section is known as raffinate or refinery feed stock, at each section the gas stream is taken off, condensed to a liquid with the heavier section refluxed back the distiller, whilst the recovered condensed sections at the required SG go as run down to storage. The final heavier sections known as fuel oils are sent to storage. Subject to the refinery units and equipment these will be treated through other processes , usually passing the heavier base oil, through a high vacuum unit, before passing the product through a "cracking"unit, or utilized and blended off as fuel oil stock for power production plants fuel oils.

The initial crude oil can be sweet or sour, if it is sour the produced gas flows from the distiller will also be sour, these flows will flow with other gases through the amine treating contactor to remove the sour and acid content form the gas flow. This responsibility was jointly held with the refinery units supervision, upon request he implemented the changes that were required to operate the process effectively.

crude distillation

Many of the crude oil of the world are produced as sweet crude oil, but some are produced as sour or H2S crude oils, these, when the process of refining starts the gas flows are routed through a amine treatment section, or the liquids produced are washed through amine sweetening wash vessels to remove the sourness and H2S. Recently in eastern Siberia (Sakhalin Island ) a new gas well was commissioned on line, shortly after approximately three weeks the production from the well had reduced to less than one third of previous production, all were requested for idea's, it was a suggestion he made to check the choke, coupled with the knowledge that all of the floats on the treatment plant, were at the bottoms of their chambers, they were magatrolls, it was blocked with perforations, this choke valve was changed out on five occasions from the drilling, this was the second longest horizontal drilled well in the world. As this was a remote location, he was responsible for the initial start-up for both crude oil and the first flowed gas, he was also responsible for the training of both expatriates and local operations personnel, spending as much time with the process operators as was required.

Desulfurization, is a term used during refinery process production treatment, it is commonly termed as the method of reducing the sulfur content during the processing of refinery products. Usually the tolerance on the refined product allows for the sulfur content to be at a certain level, should the content be at a higher level it will be passed through the desulfurization unit, to reduce the sulfur content to an acceptable level. Normally this applies to the gas oil range of products, or any product that has a higher content than the tolerance. As this is applied to a product and stays as a liquid flow. It will not be reduced to a gas and treated in the amine treatment section. Any sulfur gas vapors removed can be pressured to the sulfur recovery plant, or sent to the incineration unit for burning, through-out this process he was totally responsible for the successful operation of the units.
He was able to source different steam traps that differed greatly form the inverted bucket traps. To a totally controllable trapping system, that even after 6 years of continued use. Were never opened or inspected, yet after each annual shut down, when the process plant was placed back in operation, the steam traps "immediately" were on line and working efficiently. As these liquids have already passed through the gas treatment and NGL recovery sections and are usually classed as finished products. Should they be required to be further refined. They are passed through further splitting columns, plus condensers to produce "other" hydrocarbon grades. There is little or no association with other processes. This process for distillations was completely re-organised, he implemented production elements changes and reset the process profile. Then he tuned the system to operate effectively and efficiently. Whist increasing production for the client, he organised other process changes that benefited the process and the client.

distillation column

He, aided by the fire fighting crew and team, was process operations production manager for and throughout the period when a floating roof tank seal ignited during a fierce thunder storm, organizing the "refinery" fire control fighters managed to contain and control a refinery tank roof fire, the tank was completely full containing 500.000bbls of crude oil, its position on the refinery was close and adjacent to a local Bahamian village where over 4500 people lived, through their efforts the general life of the local villagers was not comprised, although the view of the tank roof fire was visible for over 2 miles, because of this incident and the attitude of the refinery management, a full and complete fire and safety operational plinth, designated for training and application was set up, complimented by total procedure and application on the full members of the refinery staff, training them in the complex hazards of refinery working. That allow anyone within the refinery to be efficiently trained. This was dramatically demonstrated 9 months later, when an over sized pump motor broke loose from its mountings, igniting oil, spilt from fractured pipework, which created a major pipeline/ pipe track refinery fire that covered 1/3 of the refinery area, because of and due to the intensive fire & safety training, this fire incident was efficiently resolved, without any loss of production or injury.
During a period of time in eastern Siberia, he was instrumental at Chayvo well site, on an EPF (early production facility) that was commissioned and put on line. No methanol injection system had been provided, as it was stated that there was not water is the gas or oil flows. This was refuted as the oil trains final vessel was the de-gassing vessel separated and produced the gas/oil and water. As hydrates will form at +15.4 degrees temperature. When the ambient air temperature is below -30 degrees, hydration or hydration will and does occur were there is any slight restriction, namely control valves and exchangers.

To resolve this problem he was requested by the client to implement a methanol injection system that he had advised the client to use. Through his advise and the knowledge he passed onto the commissioning company operators, the process plant was run efficiently providing the client with production through the EPF plant, after the methanol system was placed in operation. The hydrate problem was re-solved. As this is gas treatment it is not linked to the amine treatment section for process treatment.

Being responsible for the start-up of the processes he then vetted and sourced out the injection points for the methanol injection. This coupled with the extreme cold weather. His efforts were rewarded when the process plant became "free" to run. He adjusted controls, organized the injection points and implemented the adjustments.

On a location in the Middle East, he advised his client to change all exchangers and condensers previously made by the client's labor force. Because all of the "homemade" exchangers and condensers had fractured. These were changed out for stainless steel tubing, which resolved the immediate corrosion problem.

He also advised the client to measure and change out the Bourne gas heater main tubes, as these constantly fractured. Through this one item, the gas processing plant was shut down 4 times a year to change out the damaged tubes. He advised the replacing of the previous tubes with stainless steel tubes. This item is directly linked and associated with the amine process treatment as they both deal heavily with sour and acid gases.

His efforts saved the client numerous hours of down time and his efforts and implementation reaped benefits that are still being felt to-day. He is solely responsible for these changes.

Jet Fuel Additive (Jet Fuel) commonly known as AVTUR. Is the fuel air plane jets use to burn in their engines. It is a refined grade of Kerosene called K1 (AVTUR) in the modern jet engine there is remarkably few additives that are used to better performances. Normally these are restricted to the previously added additives like A.I.A and A.S.A which are imputed due to the height air crafts can now reach; military aircraft reach even higher heights. A.I.A being anti icing additive A.S.A being anti static additive.

As a government military AVTUR inspector it was essential that these commodities were added correctly to enable military pilots to achieve the heights they were required to go to. On one particular occasion someone had omitted to check the dosing meter, he advised the management to contact the air drones that the AVTUR had been delivered too. These were contacted. Spare additives were dispatched and added on site.

Natural Gas Pipeline: Commonly these pipelines are used to transfer gas over long distances. Wells and field service pipelines usually are of lesser size and shorter distances. Previously used pipelines are of the size of 36" or 48" transferring gas and condensate over longer distances. This natural gas pipeline was used 24/7/365, year on year. These pipelines have little or nothing to link them to other processes as they are the end user. Delivering away from the process plant to other process plant locations at distance. Expert has unique experience in regards to maintenance, design and flow control of natural gas pipelines.

He has over numerous years, built a scale model and applying for patents. For a method that has been developed which carries out all of what the other system do, but in one vessel. He demonstrated to interested parties and they were extremely impressed by his results.

Recently a North Sea Company de-manned one of its platform, passing via umbilical pipeline system from the de-manned platform, to the manned production platform treating ( separating ) the crude oil products on the other platform, only they used three separators. The method that was demonstrated to the interested parties, used only one separator. Achieving 100% separation. Since that time, refinements to the system have been penciled in.

His efforts have resolved numerous oil separation problems. He has been responsible for the cleanliness and up keep of plants and installations.During the Iraq - Iran war, whilst working in Iraq, a bombed pipeline was being cleared of old oil. Through a malfunction the separator system was covered completely with thick oil. Because of his understanding plus knowledge, it was totally cleared, back to the original pre-accident state within 8 hours. Avoiding the client and contracting company of a hazardous pollution problem. No oil was wasted. All oil treated was then recovered.

Expert has considerable knowledge of the internal/inside knowledge regarding sulfur combustion chambers and systems. Refurbishing combustion matrix fire guard walls,. Re-lining bourne gas fired heaters refacturated walls and linings. The sulphur combustion fire box is the reaction chamber fire ignition point. A matrix wall protects the waste heat boiler from the direct flames. Acid gas and vapour of H2S, are scorched and seered in this area, before the "burnt" acid gas is forced through the waste heat boiler tubes. Before the catalyst reaction beds, before sulphur recovery by condensing, the changed sulphur vapour gases. He was responsible for the production, the process and the operation of a plant. Being totally responsible for every action, while he was on site.

High Speed Marine Transport: This title is not normally associated within the oil and gas industry. Except as a means and mode of transport. It is widely used in remote location areas that have large expanses of water to travel over, such as the Nigerian Swamps. Other locations else-where on sites that have extremely shallow water. These craft are a bonus. He was during his earlier years before entering the oil and gas industry. A member of Royal Air Force, serving his time as a crew member on the Air Sea Rescue High Speed Marine craft. His position within the high speed craft was as the radio operator. He is to this day still accepted as a marine radio operator. A large part of his training was front line emergency first aid. Coupled with rescue from water. He partook during his time in the military in the training of civilian and military pilots, in the North Sea. As the radio operator it was his responsibility to maintain contact at all times with land based control stations.
