Expert was a co-developer on a gene therapy strategy for the treatment of cancer and was a advisory board member for the Keck Gene Therapy Center at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She demonstrated apoptosis following adenoviral p53-mediated delivery in tumors providing the groundwork for clinical trials in non-small cell lung cancer and multiple patents for this therapeutic technology. She collaborated in multiple Phase I, II, and III clinical trials using AdvexinTM and designed and implemented assays supporting phase I and II clinical trials (monitoring and pre-clinical development). In addition to gene therapy clinical trials, she served as co-investigator on Phase I and II clinical trials involving cytokine therapy while maintaining multiple federal, private and foundation grants to support this research. In this position, she also developed curricula and taught medical school and graduate courses in tumor immunobiology, immunology, gene therapy, apoptosis, and cytokine biology.
