Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • Following a 4-day annual outage on a high speed tissue machine, the machine was not capable of producing a quality product which continued for 3 days resulting in over $1 million in losses. He was called in to survey the situation and within 20 minutes had identified an area of the machine that had excess water which subsequently found was due to a new pump installation during the outage. The pump was shut down resulting in the paper being produced immediately being within specification and the machine performed normally thereafter.
  • After a new 1000 degree hood was installed on a high speed tissue machine, the produced sheet was continuously sucked in to the dry end hood. The hood technical service engineer could not solve the problem though had tried for over 5 hours. The expert was called in, asked a few questions while observing the process control computer schematic, then pointed to a damper and stated that most likely it was not operating correctly. It was found that the instrument-to-pneumatic controller had failed. After it was replaced, the hood functioned as designed and the machine began producing quality paper.
  • He was given the task to reduce water consumption in a 5-paper machine operation which was averaging 19 million gallons/day. Eleven months later, average water consumption was at 11 million gallons/day utilizing all non-captial means. Capital improvements identified which would reduce usage an additional 45%.
  • He was given the task to start up a mothballed towel machine with the stipulation that the total energy being used in the 4-paper machine operation must remain the same with a 5-machine operation. This was accomplished on scheduled and had the added benefit of controlling "peak" steam and power usage which significantly reduced demand charges from the utility company.
  • Given the task to implement tissue web layering on a high quality tissue machine. Numerous attempts to commercial this process had failed since the machine was installed 4 years earlier. He led a team that worked with the manufacturer to redesign the mechanics as well as the control logic to successful implement sheet layering within allotted time schedule.
