Expert was a post-doctoral researcher in the Particle Technology Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, one of the world's top aerosol laboratories. He recently received the Kenneth Whitby Award from and American Association for Aerosol Research and joined the editorial advisory board of the journal Aerosol Science and Technology. His aerosol related research focuses on the intentional aerosol synthesis of nanoparticles. This has included laser-driven, flame-based, and furnace-based methods for producing nanoparticles from liquid (sprayed) or vapor precursors. He has also constructed detailed chemical kinetic models of silicon nanoparticle nucleation and aerosol dynamics.

Expert carried out his Ph.D. research on gas phase chemical kinetics relevant to vapor phase materials processing (chemical vapor deposition and aerosol synthesis of nanoparticles). He has served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Chemical Kinetics and written book chapters on chemical kinetics. He has taught a graduate level chemical kinetics and reaction engineering course for several years, and has published many papers on chemical kinetics in journals such as the Journal of Physical Chemistry.

Expert has been active in the vapor phase and solution phase synthesis of nanoparticles for the past ten years, and has developed a broad expertise in many approaches to nanoparticle synthesis. His research group has developed new methods for producing anisotropic and hybrid (multi-component) nanoparticles in solution, and this technology has been licensed commercially. He has an issued patent on vapor-phase synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, and several pending patent applications for other nanoparticle synthesis methods. His technology for nickel nanoparticle synthesis has also been licensed.
