Invited to join Motorola by Senior Vice President to build systems engineering know-how for Motorola's new Automotive Communications Business unit. Built an entirely new systems engineering team and managed 20 senior level engineers in 4 international office locations. The team filed more than 20 international patent applications. Established effective processes to provide system design and requirement specifications using advanced tools for project management, change management, requirements management, system modeling and simulation, and configuration management. Significantly reduced the time to market, made the engineering schedule more predictable, and improved the product quality.

Co-founded the new research office in Palo Alto California. Designed the research agenda and built a US based research group in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) with focus on technologies for automated highway systems (AHS), precision positioning systems, telematics, and innovative mobile media systems. Grew the team to 10 full time researchers, 5 rotating guest researchers and numerous interns and external consultants. Acquired and completed projects for various corporate divisions and managed a total budget of three million dollars. Published a variety of research papers and gained international attention with the innovative “Internet Multimedia on Wheels” concept, which was nominated for the Smithsonian Computerworld Award.

Second stage in the leadership exchange program at Intertraffic, a 100% Daimler-Benz subsidiary. Managed successful implementation of next generation intelligent traffic guidance infrastructure with the primary focus being on business models and traffic information delivery mechanisms. Shaped the definition of Mercedes-Benz's Telematics requirement specification and developed several business models for novel emergency call and navigation systems.

Research Scientist, Vehicle Information Technology 12/1991 - 12/1993.

First stage in the leadership exchange program at Daimler-Benz research. Successfully designed and managed implementation of new systems with distributed computing capability for automation of vehicle-vehicle crash testing, saving $2 million in infrastructure investment. Created Daimler's first intelligent vehicle research in the US. Successfully built the distributed control software and hardware for an autonomous electronically guided test truck for Automated Highway System (AHS) operation.
