Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • Retained by the State of California to serve as an expert in litigation resulting from a multiple fatality failure at a large power plant. The failure resulted in a loss of approximately$400,000,000, the loss of 7 lives and the injury of 11 additional personnel. The failure was determined to be due to improper operating conditions at the plant resulting in accelerated creep of the high pressure steam piping. In addition, the operators of the plant did not perform adequate inspection of the high pressure steam piping. Provided deposition and testified in court. The case resulted in the power company being responsible for the loss.
  • Evaluated cathodic protection system on Strait Crossing Bridge, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The cathodic protection system was not properly designed and provided inadequate protection to the ice shields on the bridge supports. Recommended and assisted in the design and implementation of remedial action and validated the performance of the modified system.
  • Retained by a municipal water district to coordinate the design and installation of cathodic protection systems on water treatment and storage tanks. Developed an ongoing cathodic protection system maintenance plan and trained district employees in proper inspection and maintenance techniques.
  • Evaluated alternatives to galvanized steel gratings in an amusement attraction for a major southern California theme park. Recommended alternative materials with the same appearance as the original gratings with a significantly longer life and significantly lower life-cycle cost.
  • Retained as an expert in the evaluation of a large desalination facility using power plant effluent as feedwater. Due to improper materials selection and improper chemical treatment of the feedwater, severe corrosion resulted in the shutdown of the plant after only about 6 months of operation. Cost to repair the damage with suitable materials and proper chemical treatment was approximately $ 40,000,000. The case was settled shortly after the expert's deposition.

International Experience:
Years   Country / Region   Summary
2002 to 2003   Canada   Inspected cathodic protection system on Strait Crossing Bridge and identified inadequacies of the cathodic protection system design. Prepared a modified design and assisted in the modification of the original system and validation of the performance of the modified system.
2002 to 2002   Canada   Presented a one-week NACE International Corrosion Control training course in Calgary, Alberta
1999 to 1999   Canada   Presented three one-day Materials Seminars for the Nickel Institute in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
1999 to 1999   Indonesia   Inspected heat exchangers in a sulfuric acid plant in Gresik Indonesia that were corroding on the seawater side of the exchangers. Determined that the corrosion was due to inadequate chlorination of the seawater. After adequate chlorination was provided and the corrosion damage was repaired, the corrosion ceased.
1999 to 1999   Japan   Met with Mitsubishi regarding corrosion of seawater cooled heat exchangers in a sulfuric acid plant in Indonesia. As a manufacturer's representative provided Mitsubishi with information regarding the selection of heat exchanger materials based on the corrosion literature and testing performed by the plant manufacturer. This meeting resulted in the field trip to Indonesia described above.
