Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

His expertise began with his first research experience for his Master's Degree work at the Johns Hopkins University, where he prepared and studied the solvolytic decomposition of N-nitrosoamides. His experience continued at the University of Chicago where he studied photocycloadditions to aromatic molecules, singlet oxygenation, and the theory of exciplex formation. During his postdoctoral tenure at the Rockefeller University he explored the state selectivity of the fate of acetylenically substituted 1,4-biradicals. In this work he developed methods to prepare and purify the thermally labile acetylenic 1,1-diazine required as a source of the desired biradicals.

His first industrial experience was with Polaroid Corporation to which he was recruited to aid in the development of new holographic recording media and products arising from such media. He quickly demonstrated his value with the demonstration of a novel sensitizing system to permit recording with the company's DMP-128 material using green laser illumination. He demonstrated further versatility by identifying an important absorption dye candidate for use in laser protection eyewear. The success of this work was shown with the purchase of $20MM of laser protection lenses by the USMC and US Army for use in the Desert Storm action in Iraq in 1991.

In 1991 he was promoted to lead the holographic research effort at Polaroid, in which role he led the development of hologram/liquid crystal composites. In an effort to develop optically responsive optical limiters he discovered methods to produce nanocrystalline metal sulfides in the polymer matrix of DMP-128. He also contributed to the invention of new methods to produce holographic diffusers, an application being developed for products by the Holographic Products division.

In 1997 he was promoted to lead the Polymer Research Department of Polaroid. In that capacity he led activities and discussions regarding the design and use of polymers for a number of applications, including adhesives, alignment of liquid crystal materials, and mordanting of image dyes.

As he undertook more managerial responsibility, he also served as a scientific advisor to a number of corporate research activities. He performed molecular modeling that shed light on the significance of proposed molecular mechanisms in novel media for digital imaging applications. He also continued to be a source of leadership for the company's Holographic Products division, leading several process improvement activities.

In the mid-1990s his team began exploring new holographic materials appropriate for use in data storage. This application requires materials with a number of discrete characteristics, including the ability to rapidly generate high refractive index modulations with very little distortion as might accompany volumetric shrinkage. The team envisioned the use of siloxane epoxide oligimers blended with non-reactive high index siloxanes to provide opportunity for the required index modulation. His leadership of this program led to programmatic success that culminated in the demonstration of a rapid recording system using this media at Stanford University. The significance of the work led to the spin-off of this team to pursue commercialization of the developed technology.

His tenure at one of his companies focused on business and corporate development activities. In addition to his role as Vice President of Business Development he also served as this company's Corporate Secretary and Teasurer.
