2001 to 2008

Northrop Grumman Corporation

The Expert carried out testing, analysis, writing, and customer presentations of literature and testing studies of metallic and nonmetallic materials. The goal of the studies was to extend the life of a complex marine missile launching system and this goal was achieved. The Expert's technical writing skills were key to the successful outcome of the project. The corrosion of painted steel and the deterioration of adhesives and elastomers was a special concern in this project.

1983 to 2001

Westinghouse Corporation/Northrop Grumman Corporation

Consulting Engineer

The Expert served as technical leader of a group of materials engineers supporting the design and construction of defense hardware. At the working level he provided materials selection guidance for many engineering design projects, carried out failure analysis of metallic and nonmetallic materials in service, and through testing determined the aging behavior of adhesives, elastomers, and propellants.

1967 to 1982

U.S. Steel Research

Research Engineer

The Expert carried out research, testing, and failure analysis to develop new steel alloys and coated steels with enhanced corrosion resistance. The products he developed were licensed internationally by U.S. Steel.

1993 to   Transportation Research Board   Consultant   He contributed reports on the atmospheric corrosion of bridge steels.

Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • For the State of Hawaii the Expert carried out failure analysis on a heavily corroded steel structure. He prepared an extensive expert opinion document, participated in an ADH, was deposed, and testified in trial.
  • For the National Forest Service he carried out an investigation of the cause of heavy corrosion on a forest logging road bridge, and presented a written report.
  • For a California grape grower the Expert carried out a failure analysis of fractured steel grape stakes. He prepared a report giving his expert opinion, and was deposed. The case was settled before trial.
  • For the American Iron and Steel Institute the Expert investigated the cause of excessive corrosion of a series of highway bridges.
  • For the Rhode Island DOT the Expert investigated the suitability of various bridge sites for bare weathering steel construction and presented a written report.
